OSWEGO, NY – The University of Rochester baseball team ran into a red-hot Oswego State team on Tuesday afternoon and succumbed to the host Lakers in both games of a non-league doubleheader at Laker Baseball Field.
Oswego posted a 23-7 win in game one, scoring in seven of their eight innings in which they came up to bat. In game two, the Lakers won 9-4, stretching their win streak to 14 in a row. Rochester drops to 16-7 with the two losses.
Ryan Weiss got things started with a bang in the bottom of the first for Oswego, launching a grand slam which put Oswego up 4-0. The Lakers would score three or more runs in five innings during the victory and capitalized on some wild pitching from the Rochester staff, as the Yellowjackets issued 14 walks in the game.
Offensively, Rochester's leading hitters were
Aaron Whitley,
John Moses and
Brian McKinsey. Whitley was 3-for-5 with three doubles, a run, stolen base and an RBI. Moses finished 3-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI. He added a walk and hit by pitch to reach in all five plate appearances. McKinsey added a 2-for-4 day with a double and run scored.
Luke Boylan took the loss for Rochester.
Magnus Sivertson tossed 4.1 innings of relief and
Dan Agate went the last two innings on the mound.
In game two, it was again Weiss to get the scoring started for Oswego, this time hitting a 2-run homer in the bottom of the second inning. The Lakers would boost their lead to 4-0 through four innings.
Rochester got within two in the top of the fifth after
Dylan Stezzi and Whitley provided RBI base hits, but Oswego answered right back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to regain its big lead.
UR's final two runs came in the last inning, as
Aidan Shea had an RBI single and
Joseph Rende plated a run with a groundout.
In game two, Whitley was the lone UR player with multiple hits, going 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI. On the mound,
Nolan Sparks pitched into the fifth inning for Rochester and ended up taking the loss.
Spencer Rojahn and
Nathan Slenska cleaned up the last 1.1 innings for the Yellowjackets.
Rochester takes on another SUNYAC team on Wednesday, as the 'Jackets travel to Brockport for a doubleheader starting at 2 pm.
