Sharlach, Leahy Sharp As Rochester Wins Twice at RPI

TROY, N.Y. – Hannah Leahy and Emily Sharlach turned in another set of strong pitching performances as the University of Rochester swept a softball doubleheader at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 4-0, and 5-1, on Saturday afternoon.

The two wins boosted Rochester's record to 26-7 overall, 19-2 in the Liberty League. RPI is 4-3 overall, 3-2 in the league. The same two teams will play another twinbill Sunday, this one at Rochester's Southside Field. The first game is scheduled for a 1 pm start.

Allison Beckwith hit a two-run home run for Rochester in the fourth inning to break a 0-0 tie. Hannah Keiper hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning, increasing the UR lead to 5-1. Game One:
Leahy picked up her 11th victory of the season (11-3), her career high. It was her fourth solo shutout this year and her seventh solo shutout of her career. She has one shared shutout this season and two overall shared shutouts. She allowed two hits, walked two, and struck out five. She stranded three baserunners.

Rochester collected nine hits. Marissa Russo, Sammi Re, and Carson each had two hits. After the Carson HR in the second inning, Russo singled home Madi Turner for a 2-0 lead. In the fifth, Toni Anne Hahn singled in Re and Keiper singled home Hahn.

Leahy had a no-hitter through six innings before Allie Hunt dropped a ball into shallow right field near the foul line. Freshman Alex Ledger added a single two batters later, but RPI could not mount a threat.

Rochester collected seven hits off RPI starter Alexis Cooke. A sophomore, Cooke had four strikeouts and one walk in five innings. The loss was Cooke's first this season (3-1).

Leahy pitched a no-hitter at Skidmore College on April 24. It was the seventh no-hitter in Rochester's softball history. She threw a two-hit 9-1 victory over 12th-ranked St. John Fisher College on April. In that win, she had a no-hitter for 6.2 innings (with UR ahead, 8-0, in the top of the fifth). Fisher put together two hits to cut it to 8-1. The Yellowjackets scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to win on the mercy rule.

Game Two:
Sharlach ran her record to 9-3 overall with a four-hitter against RPI She walked one and struck out three. It was her 10th complete game this season. She lowered her ERA to 1.85.

The second game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Beckwith hit a home run to left center field with Hahn on base. Keiper added a three-run shot an inning later and the visitors led 5-0 after five. Askins countered with an opposite field lead-off home run to cut the deficit to four runs, but Sharlach retired the next six batters to close out the game.

Keiper had two hits, a run and three RBI in the game, while Beckwith finished with two hits, a run and two runs batted in.
