Yellowjackets Sweep Clarkson to Clinch LL Regular Season Title

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Rochester wrapped up the Liberty League regular season softball title with a sweep of a doubleheader at Clarkson University. The Yellowjackets won game one, 3-2, and took the nitecap, 5-3. The two wins give Rochester a record of 29-8, 22-3 in the Liberty League.

The title means the Yellowjackets are the top seed for the Liberty League playoffs which begin Wednesday. The pairings, as announced by the league office have #1 Rochester (22-3) hosting #4 Skidmore (11-8) and #2 Ithaca (19-4) hosting #3 RPI (9-3). Wednesday's winners will play for the Liberty League's Pool A (automatic) berth into the NCAA Division III tournament. That game will take place on Saturday at the highest remaining seed.

Game One:
Hannah Leahy and Emily Sharlach combined for the victory. Leahy pitched six complete innings and faced two batters in the bottom of the seventh (with Rochester ahead, 3-1). Sharlach relieved. She yielded a single to load the bases, then retired three in a row to get the save and clinch the win.

In six innings, Leahy allowed five hits, two runs (one earned), walked two and fanned four. Her record is 12-4. Sharlach picked up her second save this season. In one inning, she allowed one hit and struck out one.

Olivia Zoeller, who earned a victory over Rochester on Saturday, 3-2 at Southside Field, took the loss for the Golden Knights. She is 14-4. On Sunday, she allowed six hits, three runs (one earned run), and struck out 11.
Emily Sharlach
Sharlach had a win and a save vs CU.

Clarkson scored an unearned run in the first and threatened to score more. Zoeller reached on an error, was bunted to second, took third on a flyout, and scored on a single by Kayla Robert.  A walk and another error loaded the bases, but Leahy induced a grounder to second to end the inning.

Rochester evened it with a run in the fourth. Sammi Re reached on an error. She stole second, then advanced to third on a passed ball. Hannah Keiper singled her home. Alexis Klee ran for her and stole second. Allison Beckwith grounded out, moving Klee to third, but Zoeller got back to back strikeouts to end the inning.

Alexis Pope singled in the fifth, stole second, and moved to third on a fielding error. With two outs, she scored after another error to put Rochester ahead, 2-1. UR scored quickly in the seventh to go ahead, 3-1. Jen Carson singled up the middle and scored on Toni Anne Hahn's double to left.

Game Two:
Sharlach (11-3) pitched a complete game victory in game two. She scattered eight hits over seven innings with no walks and three strikeouts. She gave up a solo home run to Robert in the fourth (cutting the Yellowjacket lead to 3-1) and another to Sarah Vaccaro in the sixth.

Clarkson scratched out another run in the seventh, but Rochester threw out one runner at the plate, just before an RBI single made it 5-3. Sharlach retired Zoeller who hit into a game-ending double play on a line drive to Keiper.

UR walked home with a run in the first on four consecutive walks. Hahn got credit for the RBI. In the third, Keiper singled and advanced after Carson struck out. Alizah Ayon singled her home. Hahn doubled her to third and Pope's sac fly made it 3-0. The Yellowjackets added two fifth-inning runs on passed balls for a 5-1 lead.

Rochester had five hits off three Clarkson pitchers. Ayon was 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Keiper scored two runs. Hahn scored one and drove in one on the fourth straight walk in the first inning.

Clarkson used three pitchers. Emily McBath went the first 2.1 innings, Riley Page pitched two more innings, and Zoeller, fresh off the seven-inning 11-K performance in game one, pitched the last 2.2 innings. She fanned five batters. The Golden Knights are 18-13 overall, 10-10 in the Liberty League.
