Volleyball Falls to Ithaca, Defeats Thiel at Brockport Tourney

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Rochester compiled 57 kills, four shy of matching a season's high, and defeated Thiel College, 3-1, in the SUNY Brockport Volleyball Tournament on Saturday afternoon. Coupled with an 0-3 loss to Ithaca, the Yellowjackets stand at 5-3 overall. Rochester lost to Ithaca, 22-25, 15-25, 13-25. The Yellowjackets rebounded against Thiel, 25-23, 25-20, 19-25, 25-19.
 
Rochester vs. Ithaca: Sonia McGaffigan had eight kills. Megan Gatz and Kaylin Wiliams had three kills. Zaire Reyes had eight assists. Megan Hauer had three assists and eight digs. Isabelle Miranda had three assists, and Ana Cerezer had seven digs. Gatz served four aces, had two blocks, and five digs. Williams had three blocks.
 
In the first set, a kill by Williams put Rochester ahead, 12-9. That run included a kill from McGaffigan and a service ace from Diana Karosas. The Bombers scored five of six points and moved in front, 19-17. Williams had another kill to pull Rochester within 22-20, but Ithaca closed with five straight points for the win.
 
Ithaca's 8-2 run in set two built a 16-9 lead that turned into the 25-20 victory. In the third set, Ithaca led 7-2 before Rochester crept within 12-10. The Bombers ran off 12 of 13 points to push their way to victory.

Cerezer had 8 kills and 2 aces vs. Thiel


Rochester vs. Thiel College: Gatz had 18 kills and 16 digs. Cerezer had eight kills and two service aces. Alexia Nelms had three service aces and 23 assists. Reyes added 15 assists. McGaffigan chipped in with seven kills, four service aces, and two blocks. La'I Yuen had 12 digs and six assists.
 
In the back-and-forth first set, Rochester trailed 10-9 before moving in front,  14-12. Another four-point burst put Rochester up, 20-17. Thiel answered with five points and re-took the lead at 22-21. Reyes set kills by Gatz and Cerezer to spark a 4-0 run and the victory.
 
Nelms had assists on kills by Gatz and Williams then served three straight aces as Rochester took charge with a 14-8 lead. In the third set, Thiel stayed in front most of the match. Rochester pulled within 22-19 but Thiel scored the last three points.
 
McGaffigan served five straight points in the last set, helping Rochester extend its lead to 22-12. The Yellowjackets had an early 10-2 run for a 16-9 lead.
