Late Goal By New Paltz Gives Hawks a 4-3 Field Hockey Win over UR

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Morgan Wooley scored with 1:51 remainingn to snap a 3-3 tie and give visiting SUNY New Paltz a 4-3 field hockey victory over the University of Rochester at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks improved to 4-1 overall with the win. Rochester is now 4-2 overall. This was the fourth straight game for the Yellowjackets against teams from the State University of New York Athletic Conference. In midweek, Rochester defeated previously unbeaten (and unscored upon) Oswego State, 4-1.

Wooley scored twice for New Paltz. The Hawks got their other goals through Natasia Plunkett (who assisted on the gamewinner) and Julia Cummings (who scored the opener). Shannon Bernhardt assisted on Plunkett's goal.

The Rochester goalscorers were Karina Bridger, Jessica Unkel, and Amanda Strenk. Bridger assisted on the Unkel goal and Unkel set up Strenk for the goal that tied the score at 3-3.

In goal, Abigaill Walrond made nine saves for Rochester in 60 minutes. Ryan Dowling went the first 35:06 for the Hawks. She allowed two goals and made three saves. She was replaced by Mackenzie Mortimer who played the final 24:54. Mortimer made four saves and allowed one goal.

Cummings opened the scoring midway through the first half, tipping in a shot by Jessica Ascencao off a penalty corner. Wooley's first goal came off a rebound a minute into the second quarter. Dowling produced a terrific save shortly after that. Bridger was sent through alone on left wing. She raced nearly to the end line with Dowling shutting off as much angle as she could. Bridger tried to tuck it just inside the left post, but the goaltender knocked it away.

Bridger did score with 1:37 left in the first half. Rochester stole a clearance, She cut into the center of the circle and scored to the low right corner. The Yellowjackets equalized early in the third. Unkel collected Bridger's pass and turned it into the net in the 34th minute. Plunkett broke the tie quickly, taking a short pass from Bernhardt and popping it into the net.

Strenk, who had challenges finding shooting space all game long, got the Yellowjackets even with 5:47 to play. Unkel sent in a pass from the left side and Strenk backhanded it into the far corner of the cage.

New Paltz pushed forward, As the clock dropped below two minutes, Plunkett pushed a short pass to Wooley who popped it into the net.
