Carnegie Uses Clutch Scoring Runs to Pull Away from Rochester

PITTSBURGH: Carnegie Mellon University won for the third time in its four UAA games when the Tartans defeated the University of Rochester, 63-47, in a women's basketball game on the CMU campus.

The Tartans used a 16-5 run in the latter portion of the second quarter to pull away from a back-and-forth quarter and a half. That run put CMU ahead, 34-25, in the final minute of the second quarter. A layup by Rochester's Callie McCulley made it 34-27 at the break.

Rochester slipped to 2-2 in the UAA standings, 10-5 overall. Carnegie Mellon is 3-1 in the league, 9-4 overall. CMU narrowly won the battle of the boards – 51-48 – after holding a +10 board advantage coming into the game. Rochester grabbed 14 rebounds on its own end and turned them into 13 points. CMU's numbers were similar – 14 boards,, 12 second chance points.

Neither team shot well from outside the arc. Rochester hit 4 of 18 long-range shots (.222) while the hosts made 4 of 20 (.200). Overall, Carnegie had an advantage,, 26 pf 72 (.361) to Rochester's 17-65 (.262). That was built on the strength of 32 points in the paint to Rochester's 20-such points.

UR got off to a good start early – a trey by Alexis Sestric, four inside points from Julianna Okoniewski, and a jumper from Hannah Lindemuth. It was 9-2. CMU answered with six in a row and from that point (9-8 UR), it was close for the end of the first quarter and the first three minutes of the second quarter. A fastbreak layup by Lindemuth put Rochester ahead, 20-18 before the first key surge began – the 16-5 run.

An early 8-3 run stretched the lead to 42-30 after halftime. Rochester parried from there: Charlotte Adler had a fast break, Haley Dumiak scored in the paint, and Paige Gaynier made a layup to keep the margin around 11. A Lindemuth layup pulled Rochester within 50-42 40 seconds into the final quarter. Carnegie used a 12-0 run to break it wide open.

Lindemuth scored 11 points. Okoniewski and Adler had nine each. McCulley took home game rebounding honors with 13 boards – all off the defensive glass. Carnegie had two players in double figures – Megan Matsko scored 12 and Caitlyn Clendenin had 10. Three others had nine points apiece. The majority of the board crashing came from Catherine Or (10), Leah Weslock, Clendenin, and Matsko with eight each.

On Sunday, Rochester will play at Case Western Reserve (2 pm tipoff).
