Rochester Earns Sweep Of Roberts On Senior Day

The Rochester volleyball team picked up its tenth win of the season on senior night, defeating Roberts Wesleyan University 3-0 on Friday night at the Louis Alexander Palestra.

Prior to the game, seniors Ana Cerezer, Sonia McGaffigan and Gillian Reeder all were honored for their effort and dedication to the UR volleyball program over their time on the River Campus.

With the victory, Rochester improves to 10-10 on the year with five matches remaining in the regular season. Roberts Wesleyan's record falls to 3-15 on the season.

The Yellowjackets jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after hitting a terrific .353 in the opening set, leading to a 25-15 win.

UR surged out to a 5-1 lead and never looked back. Cerezer started up the match with three straight kills, with McGaffigan and Areti Tsirikaki each adding one in the early run. Roberts Wesleyan closed to 5-4 but another four-point rush, spurred on by three Tsirikaki kills, put the Yellowjackets back up 9-4.

Rochester would go on to score eight of the next 11 points to build a 10-point cushion, cruising to the first set win.

The second set was filled with runs, with the Yellowjackets popping off six straight to break a 4-4 tie and go ahead 10-4. Two McGaffigan aces and a kill from the senior highlighted the run.

The Redhawks called a timeout and promptly rattled off six straight points of their own to pull back even at 10-10.

UR answered with another five-point run, aided by two Alexia Nelms aces to go ahead 15-10, but the Redhawks surged back with eight of the next nine points to sit up 18-16.

The teams traded two-point bursts to reach 20-all, with Rochester closing out the set with five of the final seven points, including two service aces from McGaffigan for the final two points of the 25-22 win.

In the third set, the score was knotted at 13-13 before the Yellowjackets scored seven points in a row to lead 20-13. Three aces from Cerezer, along with a pair of kills from McGaffigan powered the run which helped the Yellowjackets out to big lead in the deciding set.

Roberts Wesleyan could only muster two more points the rest of the way as Rochester earned its second 25-15 win of the night to clinch the match.

The Yellowjackets were led by Tsirkaki who had 10 kills no attack errors, and ended up hitting .435 on the night. Both Cerezer and McGaffigan finished with seven kills apiece with Reeder chipping in four.
