CLEVELAND, OH – A late goal from host Case Western Reserve spoiled a huge win for the University of Rochester women's soccer team, as the teams earned a 2-2 draw on Friday night at DiSanto Field.
Rochester (7-2-5, 2-1-2 UAA) handed the 4th-ranked Spartans their first blemish of the 2022 campaign, with CWRU moving to 14-0-1 (4-0-1 UAA).
UR's
Claire Grover scored both of Rochester's goals in the first half, with Camryn Hartman returning the favor for the Spartans in the second half, the second of which came with under two minutes to play.
Grover got the visiting Yellowjackets on the board just 3:33 into the game on a great play that traversed the length of the field. UR's
Sam Hawkins gained possession deep in UR's defensive zone and sent a long pass up the midfield to
Natalie Kocsis. Kocsis did the same, sending a ball up into Case territory where Grover outran the defense and converted a breakaway goal.
Rochester's junior forward boosted the lead in the 20th minute, moving her season total to 12 on the year which ranks 7th in team season history.
Syd Coggins sent a cross in front of the goal from the left corner where Grover kicked it towards the net. CWRU keeper Maggie Storti attempted the save and stopped the ball, but her momentum carried her into the net and over the goal line, allowing Rochester to claim the 2-0 advantage.
In the second half, Case Western Reserve started its comeback in the 56th minute when Hartman cracked a hard shot from outside the box near the left sideline after a throw in. The ball found the top right corner and the Spartans had halved the lead.
CWRU continued its offensive pressure throughout the rest of the half, looking for the equalizer. In the 79th minute UR's
Gabby Sabatier denied a header shot by Aniya Hartzler.
Rochester was able to withstand the Spartan attack until the 89th minute, when Hartman cracked a hard strike from the top of the box into the top right corner to knot the score at 2-2.
After the goal, Rochester's kickoff play generated a final offensive push for the Yellowjackets, but no shots were had and the play returned to the other end.
With 56 seconds left, Katie Rishel had a shot on goal saved by Sabatier, and as the final seconds were ticking away, a shot from the left wing from Hartman missed just wide of the left post.
Rochester's end of the season road trip continues on Sunday with another ranked opponent, with UR taking on #9 Carnegie Mellon in a 1:30 pm matchup.
