Field Hockey Continues Shutout Streak In Win Over Geneseo

GENESEO, NY – The University of Rochester field hockey team wrapped up its regular season with another key regional win, defeating SUNY Geneseo 2-0 on the road at College Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Rochester (15-4) pushes its winning streak to five straight, with all those wins coming via the shutout. The loss was Geneseo's third of the 2022 season, moving the Knights to 14-3 overall.

Up next, both teams will focus on their respective conference playoffs. Rochester is the top seed in the Liberty League tournament next week, with ranking at the top of the SUNYAC standings heading into the conference playoffs.

On Saturday, UR struck first with a rebound goal from senior Nikki Mercer in the games 2nd minute. Just 93 seconds in, Maeve Fogarty took a shot which caromed off the Geneseo goalie Sarah Quinlan over to Mercer who tapped the ball into the cage for the early lead.

Afterwards, the Yellowjacket defense clamped down and allowed just four Geneseo shots the rest of the half, heading to intermission with a 1-0 lead.

At the midway point of the third quarter, UR doubled its lead with a goal from rookie Fogarty off a penalty corner. The score was the first-year's seventh of the 2022 campaign, ranking second on the team to Mercer who has 14.

Over the final 30 minutes, UR held Geneseo to just one shot attempt and one penalty corner, with neither play resulting in a good scoring chance for the home Knights.

In goal, Kara Houston earned the shutout by making two saves. Quinlan finished with four saves for Geneseo.

Overall, Rochester ended the day with an 11-5 shot advantage, with both teams earning four penalty corners.
