Hebble Scores Twice In UR's Win Over Brockport

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – After scoring two goals in both the first and third periods, the University of Rochester field hockey team powered to its fifth straight win on Tuesday night, defeating SUNY Brockport 4-1 at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

Rochester (9-2) was led by junior Delainey Hebble who scored two goals, both coming in the third quarter. It was Hebble's first career multi-goal affair.

Additionally, Nikki Mercer and Anya Arseneau also scored for the Yellowjackets, while Zoe Conomikes, Mara Heppard and Bella Militi each picked up assists. First-year forward Maeve Fogarty led all players with 14 shots, nine of which were on goal.

In the cage, Helen Schmitter started for Rochester and made one save in 45 minutes. Kara Houston added three saves and allowed the Brockport tally, playing the entire fourth quarter.

The Golden Eagles (5-5) got their score by Olivia Hayden off an assist from Kalena Eaton. Brockport's best quarter was the fourth, as five of their six shots were taken in the final 15 minutes.

Brockport's defensive effort limited the Yellowjackets to just four goals, when the score could have been much higher. In goal, Ella Buchanan was terrific, making 18 saves. Mary Young also made two defensive saves for the Golden Eagles, with Abby Chalmers adding one.

Rochester struck first on the game opening penalty corner in the sixth minute. Off a Heppard corner insert, the ball went to Conomikes on the left wing for a one-timer blast. Mercer was camped in front of the goal mouth and just tipped the hard shot past Buchanan for the 1-0 lead.

Maeve Fogarty
Fogarty had a game-high 14 shots.

In the ninth minute, Brockport's first shot on goal was a turn-around attempt from Bailey Lazore from about eight yards away in the center of the circle. Schmitter got a clean look and kicked it away for the save.

Less than a minute later, Arseneau doubled the Yellowjacket lead. The ball was sent in on a long hit from the right side where Militi tipped a shot on target which was saved. She gathered the rebound and slipped a pass in front to an open Arseneau for a tap-in goal.

In the second quarter, an offensive onslaught by Rochester was turned away by Brockport. Although the Yellowjackets earned three corners and 11 shots, none were able to find the back of the cage and the halftime lead for UR was 2-0.

Rochester kept the momentum in the third quarter, earning a whopping nine corners, while also taking ten shots. Overall, UR held an 18-1 advantage in penalty corners for the contest.

Hebble's first goal of the third came at the 31:58 mark. Heppard inserted to Karina Bridger and got the ball back at the left post. After taking a couple dribbles toward the net, she dumped a pass back to Hebble who lifted the shot into the top left corner of the net.

Five minutes later off of another corner, Heppard was denied a goal by one of Young's defensive saves, but the carom went right to Hebble in close for a rebound goal and a 4-0 Rochester lead.

Brockport was able to break through with some offensive pressure to start the fourth quarter. In the opening minute, the Golden Eagles earned their only corner of the game, and converted it into a goal.

Gianna Salerno took the initial two shots off the PC which were saved by Houston. After the second shot, Eaton scooped up the rebound and sent a cross pass between two UR defenders to Hayden at the left post for the tap-in score. It was the senior's first goal of the year.

The Golden Eagles earned two more shots in the next two minutes, but the rest of the way Brockport was held without a shot and the Yellowjackets earned the three-goal win.

UR's next matchup is a home contest on Saturday against St. Lawrence starting at 2 pm.
