ATLANTA, GA – A late goal from host Emory University spoiled a solid effort by the University of Rochester men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon, with the teams earning a 1-1 draw in the regular season finale at Emory's Woodruff P.E. Center.
Rochester's goal came in the opening half off the foot of
Nate Lazzara, with Emory getting a goal in the final five minutes from Alejandro Gomez, forcing the tie.
Emory earned the first scoring chance of the match in the 12th minute, with Zach Kornblum zig-zagging into open space at the edge of the box. His left foot attempt was saved easily by UR keeper
Santino Lupica-Tondo.
Rochester's turned on the offensive pressure over the next ten minutes, recording five shots, all of which ended up off target. Striker
Colin Canning had two, with Lazzara,
Kol Bassuk and
Tyler Moran all taking attempts which sailed wide.
Bassuk's header off a corner kick bounded up high in the air and off the top of the crossbar before Emory keeper Peter Wagner could jump up and grab the loose ball.
The Yellowjackets got on the board at the 28-minute mark following some bang-bang passing deep in Emory territory.
A long ball into the box was headed out to the wing by Canning to
Ashton Prescott. Prescott sent the ball right back to Canning who dropped a back pass to
Nick Swanger at the edge of the box. Swanger followed by finding a wide open Lazzara for the goal at the edge of the crease.
In the 35th minute,
Othman Belhseine tested Wagner for the first time with a low skidding shot from 15 yards out, but the Emory keeper kept his team within one, scooping up the shot for the save.
With time running out in the opening half, a bouncing ball found the foot of Joe Beare in close on the right side. He chopped the ball down and saw it head towards the top right corner of the net, with Lupica-Tondo leaping for the save, preserving the 1-0 UR lead.
Early in the second half, UR's Prescott and
Tony Hypsher had a 2-on-1 break along the left side. Hypsher sent the ball inside to Prescott who hit a curling shot that sailed wide left of the far post.
Three minutes later, Prescott had another chance from the right side denied by a diving Wagner in the goal.
As the clock began to wind down, Emory knew it needed to keep getting shots at the net. Over the final 15 minutes, the Eagles took five shots to just one for Rochester.
The fifth of those Eagle attempts came from Gomez about 25 yards out, with Emory forward ripping a hard strike to the upper ninety on the right side of the net. Josh Grand picked up an assist on the play, setting up Gomez in space on the left wing.
In the closing minute of the game, UR's
Tejan Borchers stole the ball and started upfield on a 3-on-2 advantage for the Yellowjackets. He swung the ball out wide to Prescott on a give-and-go before sending a cross pass to Canning who settled the ball and had his last second attempt broken up by Wagner.
