Baseball Pushes Win Streak To Six After DH Sweep

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The University of Rochester baseball team was clicking in all phases of the game on Thursday, leading to a doubleheader sweep of Ursinus College at the Ripken Experience.

The Yellowjackets won the opener 7-0 in a tidy 90 minutes, and completed the sweep with a 9-1 victory in game two.

Rochester's wins move the Yellowjackets to 8-1 on the year, with UR winning six straight games so far this week. Ursinus falls to 5-5 on the young season.

The Yellowjackets got two terrific pitching performances on the day, with starters Trevor Van Allen and Dillon Bevan each tossing complete games.

Van Allen's day featured his first career shutout, coming just five days after his first collegiate complete game. On Thursday, the senior righty allowed just five hits while striking out a career-best nine hitters.

Bevan, meanwhile, logged his first complete game in his win, scattering seven hits and one run while striking out four. He was the beneficiary of a couple key Rochester double plays early in game two.

Trevor Van Allen
Van Allen has two complete games this season.

Offensively, senior co-captain Luke Piontek led the way, going a perfect 6-for-6 across the two games. In the opener, he was 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs and an RBI. Game two featured another 3-for-3 performance with 2 doubles, 2 RBI and 3 runs scored.

Jackson Reed drove in three runs in game one while Matt Cappelletti scored twice. Brian McKinsey added two hits, two runs and an RBI in game two, while Joseph Rende recorded a big two-run single to put Rochester ahead early in the nightcap. Rochester combined to steal eight bases in the doubleheader, including six in game two. Cappelletti had three and Rende added two.

In the opener, UR jumped ahead 2-0 after the second inning after Piontek scored on an error and Cappelletti scored on a ground ball by Reed.

The fourth inning saw UR boost its lead to 6-0. Reed drove in two with a double to left. Dan Tirabassi drove him in with a double to right and McKinsey completed the scoring by crossing the plate on a wild pitch.

Piontek finished the Yellowjacket scoring in game one with an RBI single in the fifth.

Van Allen was rolling on the mound and only allowed on runner to reach as far as second base. He struck out the side in the first and had two strikeouts in both the fourth and sixth innings.

In game two, the Yellowjackets struck in the top of the first on a 2-out single by Rende, driving in McKinsey and Piontek.

Defensively in the first, Bevan yielded back-to-back one out singles, but induced a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.

A similar scenario unfolded in the bottom of the second, but this time the Bears loaded the bases with one out. Bevan wiggled out of it again, getting a 5-3 double play to keep Ursinus off the scoreboard.

Rochester's lead improved to 4-0 in the third when Cappelletti scored on a wild pitch and Joe Siciliano drove in Luke Gregory with a single.

Ursinus got its lone run of the day in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single from Solomon Griffith.

Cappelletti added an RBI single in the fourth and Rochester tacked on four runs in the fifth to reach the 9-1 final score.

Bevan meanwhile settled in after the run scored in the third, not allowing a runner past first for the remaining four innings of the game. He surrendered just one hit in that span as well.

Rochester completes is spring break schedule of games on Saturday with a doubleheader against Rivier starting a 9 am.
