Rochester Holds Off Nazareth to Move Lax Record to 5-4

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Ava Saffren made 11 saves, none more crucial than two in the fourth quarter as Rochester outlasted Nazareth College, 15-13, in a women's lacrosse game at Edwin Fauver Stadium. Rochester improved to 5-4 and won for the fourth time in the last five outings. Nazareth is 2-6.
 
The Yellowjackets built a 10-3 lead with just over three minutes left in the second quarter. Nazareth scored three consecutive goals from the free position to move within 10-6 at halftime. Rochester couldn't pull away in the second half. Nazareth's defense toughened. The visitors won draw controls and caused turnovers. For the game, Nazareth forced 13 turnovers (UR had 20 overall) – five by Emma States and three by Emma Parry. UR caused seven turnovers (Naz commited 14) – two each by Emma Little and Campbell Sy. The Yellowjackets won 19 draws. Grace Crochiere led the way with six. Little had five, Lucy Haggerty had four, and Mia Perkell won three.
 
States scored four times for Nazareth. Reva Mussi scored three times. Emma Robinson had two goals. Annie Rubel, Emily Paddock, Maggie Vay, and Maren Wallace had one each. For Rochester, Gracie Giannettino scored four goals. Little struck three times, as did Brooke Fiannaca. Crochiere had two goals as did Mia Perkell. Regi Merkin scored once. Haggerty had four assists and was accompanied by three from Giannettino.

In goal, Saffren made 11 saves and allowed 13 goals to pick up the win. Nazareth's Katie Lawrence made six saves.
 
Six of the 13 Nazareth goals came from the free position. Nazareth had 11 such attempts. Rochester had four free position shots (Crochiere and Merkin scored).
 
A yellow card to Giannettino late in the third quarter preceded a Man Down goal by Rochester and a Man Up goal by Nazareth. She was sent off with 3:19 left in the quarter. Sixty-three seconds later, Haggerty whipped a pass into the middle and Perkell scored to give Rochester a 13-8 lead. Nazareth answered with just five seconds left in the advantage (1:24 on the clock). Mussi scored on the FPA (13-9 heading into the fourth).
 
Mussi and Robinson scored in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter to get within 13-11, the closest it had been since Nazareth scored its first goal of the game (2-1 UR with 10:20 left in the first). With just under 11 minutes to go, Saffren made a point-blank stop on Vay deep in the critical scoring ahead. A minute later, she blocked a free position shot by Kate Metzler.
 
UR fed off those stops. Giannettino set up Little for a 14-11 edge with 8:57 to go. Lawrence came up big for Nazareth, hoisting a Giannettino shot over the crossbar from close range midway through the quarter. Giannettino stretched the lead to 15-11 with 5:24 remaining.
