'Jackets Grab Six Weekly Honors From Liberty League

Standout performances from several athletes from University of Rochester spring teams yielded six weekly awards from the Liberty League conference on Monday afternoon.

Senior baseball player Jacob Matzat was named Baseball Performer of the Week, while first-year teammate Colby Cruser earned the sport's Rookie of the Week accolades. In softball, Bailey Nicholoff of Rochester was awarded Rookie of the Week accolades. The women's track and field team earned two awards, as junior Madeline O'Connell was Track Performer of the Week and junior Alyssa Hoogs was Field Performer of the Week. On the men's side, first-year Cole Goodman took home Men's Track Field Performer of the Week recognition.

Matzat had a record-breaking week for Rochester as the Yellowjackets posted a 4-0 win-loss mark on the diamond. The senior DH batted .650 (13-20) with a whopping 10 extra base hits, including 4 doubles, 2 triples and 4 home runs. He added 16 RBI, 10 runs scored and had a slugging percentage of 1.650 over the four games. He had multiple hits in all four games, including going 5-for-6 and hitting for the cycle in UR's 18-10 win over Clarkson on Saturday. In that game he scored four times added a school-record tying nine RBI, matching the previous mark set in 1951. Matzat raised his average on the season from .308 to .457 during the week. He also added a key 3-run home run in the first inning on Tuesday in Rochester's win over #16 Oswego State.

Cruser was terrific on the mound as Rochester completed a three-game sweep of league rival Clarkson on Sunday. The first-year lefty pitcher tossed 6.1 innings and allowed just three hits and one run while striking out nine and walking one. He lowered his season ERA to 1.99 and picked up his second win in just his fourth career start. Rochester won the game by a 7-2 score.

Nicholoff recorded a remarkable performance in Rochester's doubleheader sweep over Skidmore to open conference play on Sunday. The first-year outfielder hit .625 (5-for-8) with 4 runs, 1 double, 3 home runs and 10 RBI. She slugged 1.875 on the day and added one walk for a .667 on-base percentage. In game one she was 2-for-5 with two runs and four RBI, including a 3-run HR in the 7th inning as UR rallied from 4-1 down to win 13-5. In game two, she launched two home runs in the first inning as the Yellowjackets cruised to a 15-1 win, finishing the contest going 3-for-3 with 6 RBI and 2 runs.

O'Connell was a part of two new school records and was a triple-event winner on Friday, competing at the University of Rochester Spring Classic. Individually, O'Connell smashed a 34-year old school record by over a second in the 400 meters, posting a time of 55.38 seconds to place first and rank #1 nationally in Division III. The other school record she broke was on Rochester's 4x100 meter relay which was first of 6 teams in a time of 48.19 seconds. The quartet ranks #9 nationally currently. O'Connell completed her terrific day with a win in the pole vault, clearing 3.67 meters. All three marks were also All-Atlantic Region qualifiers.

Hoogs ranks inside the top-50 nationally in both the long and triple jump following two top-3 performances on Friday at the UR Spring Classic. Hoogs finished runner-up in the triple jump with a mark of 11.09 meters, qualifying for the All-Atlantic Regional meet and currently sitting #44 on the national performance list. She also posted a third place result in the long jump, clearing 5.47 meters to rank #32 in Division III, also qualifying for regionals. Hoogs' marks are also #1 currently in the triple jump and #2 in the long jump within the Liberty League this season.
 
Goodman had two top-2 results and set a new school record in competing at the University of Rochester Spring Classic on Friday afternoon. The first-year jumper earned the win in the triple jump with a mark of 14.21 meters, currently the #10 distance in NCAA Division III and earned a regional qualifying performance. Goodman also is #14 nationally in the long jump after his runner-up performance in of 7.15 meters. In that event, he broke the longest standing school record, eclipsing the mark last set in 1969 by Atlas Evans by 1.5 inches.
