'Jackets Top #21 Oswego For Second Time This Season

OSWEGO, NY – For the second time in eight days, the University of Rochester baseball team took down a nationally ranked Oswego State squad, defeating the Lakers 4-3 in eight innings on Wednesday at Oswego's Laker Baseball Field.

The game was called after eight innings due to thunderstorms in the area. Rochester's win pushes the Yellowjackets win streak to 11 games and moves UR to 21-4 on the season. Oswego falls to 16-6 on the year.

For the second night in a row, the Yellowjackets used a bullpen game, with seven pitchers being used in the victory. Only first-year Mark Aaronson tossed more than one inning, ending with three strikeouts over two innings of work. Starter Trevor Van Allen ended up being credited with the win, his fifth of the season.

Rochester used quick start, plating three of the games seven total runs during the top of the first. Junior All-American Aaron Whitley got things started with a leadoff home run to put the Yellowjackets up 1-0.

Mark Aaronson
Aaronson struck out three in his two innings.

After a strikeout, Jacob Matzat doubled, Harper Sy was hit by a pitch and Joseph Rende walked to load the bases against Laker starter Sean Dertinger. Another strikeout put Rochester with two outs, but Brian McKinsey stepped up and laced a single to right scoring two runs, making it 3-0 Rochester.

Oswego threatened in the bottom of the first against UR's opener in Van Allen. With one out, Ryan Enos singled to left and Kyle Lauria was hit by a pitch. Van Allen got out of the trouble though, by getting Lukas Olsson to ground into a 5-3 double play.

The Lakers struck for a single tally in the second against Magnus Sivertson, using three singles to score CJ McCarthy. Once again Rochester used a double play, this one of the 5-4-3 variety, to end the threat.

Rochester's lead remained 3-1 until the top of the sixth. McKinsey led off the frame with a single and moved to second when Jackson Reed was hit by a pitch. Robert Constantine bunted the pair up a base and Whitley lifted a fly ball to right which was dropped, allowing the eventual winning run to cross the plate.

Oswego struck for two runs in the seventh cutting the UR lead to one. Spencer Rojahn relieved Sammy Rosenfield and hit the leadoff batter. UR's third double play of the game erased the leadoff baserunner, but a Rochester error on the next batter kept the inning alive. The Lakers capitalized on the miscue, notching off three straight hits, with Enos delivering a 2-run single to make the score 4-3.

With the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, Rojahn dug deep and got a ground out to keep Rochester in front.

The Yellowjackets nearly responded in the top of the eighth, with a double and two hit by pitches leading to the bases being loaded, but Conner VanDreason got a flyout to end the inning.

Jake Larson pitched the eighth and final inning, escaping with no damage despite issuing two free passes. It was his second save of the season.

McKinsey led the way going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Whitley and Reed each were hit twice and reached base three times. Dillon Bevan tossed one of two clean innings for Rochester, going 1-2-3 in the third, finishing with one strikeout. Aaronson had the other, setting down the side in the fifth.

Rochester has a day off on Thursday, before getting back on the field in a home weekend series against Liberty League foe St. Lawrence. A single game is scheduled for Friday while two games are on tap for Saturday.
