Little Scores Career High Five Goals but Skidmore Tops UR

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX: Visiting Skidmore College used balanced scoring to post a 17-9 women's lacrosse victory over the University of Rochester at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Friday afternoon.
 
The Throughbreds snapped a five-match losing streak. Skidmore is 3-10 overall, 3-5 in the Liberty League. Rochester is 5-7 overall, 2-6 in the league. The Yellowjackets will close out the home season on Saturday afternoon against RPI at 2 pm in Fauver Stadium Rochester finishes the 2022 campaign against Union College on April 30. Tomorrow's match will be Senior Day on the River Campus with Kate Lindsey, Sophia Stafford, and Michaela Ricker honored in pre-game ceremonies.

For Rochester, Emma Little scored a career-high five goals. Mia Perkell and Brooke Fiannaca had two each. Lucy Haggerty had two assists and Lindsey had one. 

Eight players scored goals for Skidmore; four of them scored more than one. Camille Portone scored five goals. Elizabeth Walsh scored three goals as did Gabriella Modesti. Lily Schwartzman scored twice. Maeve McKinley, Danielle Kilburn, Maddy Marr, and Emma Sellers had one each. Marr had four assists. Kilburn and Walsh had two, and McKinley set up one.

Liv Kazanjian earned the win in goal for Skidmore. In 56:08, she allowed eight goals and made 11 saves. Phoebe Beshlian played the last 3:52 with one save and one goal allowed. For Rochester, Ava Saffren logged 54:21 between the pipes. She made nine saves and allowed 16 goals. Quinn Brady played the last 5:39 with a goal allowed and one save.
 
Skidmore won 20 draw controls, 11 by Ella Harris. Lara Strunk won four draws. UR's leaders in draw controls were Grace Crochiere (four) and Haggerty (three). Crochiere collected eight ground balls and caused five turnovers. Skidmore caused 10 turnovers, three each by Walsh and Karenna Benanti.

Little scored for Rochester just 37 seconds into the match. Skidmore ran off three goals in a span of 2:38 – by Kilburn, Pontone, and Schwartzman, to take a 3-1 lead. It was 5-3 in favor of the guests after one quarter. Little had all three of Rochester's goals. Walsh and McKinley swapped goals and assists for SC a little more than two minutes apart to open the lead to 7-3. It was 8-4 at the half.
 
Perkell gave the Yellowjackets a bit of a boost in the third quarter. She found open space in midfield, collected clearing passes from the defensive third, and was able to out-pace defenders to create an attack. She turned home a Haggerty pass with nine minutes left in the third (11-5). Fiannaca scored from the free position with 5:19 left, and another Perkell sprint led to a free position goal that cut the Skidmore margin to 11-7. The Thoroughbreds settled down, getting two goals in the last 93 seconds of the third quarter, and the first three of the final quarter to stretch the lead to 16-7.
