ROCHESTER, N.Y. –
Abbie Biggs and
Lauren Keys threw shutouts as the University of Rochester swept St. Lawrence University in a softball doubleheader at Southside Field on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Yellowjackets won the opener, 7-0, behind a two-hitter from Biggs. Rochester took the nitecap, 4-0, behind a complete game effort from Keys who fanned eight. The two wins boost Rochester's Liberty League record to 8-0. UR is 16-12 overall and has won 14 straight. St. Lawrence is 15-11 overall, 3-6 in the Liberty League.
Â
In game two,
Ally Kim stole three bases which gave her the single season record for stolen bases. She now has 28 thefts in 30 tries. UR stole five bases in the second game – one apiece by
Loren Castilloux and
Molly Mason, plus the trio by Kim.
Â
Game One:
Rochester 7, St. Lawrence 0:
Biggs was honored on Senior Day and threw out the first pitch – to her father. Then she stepped to the mound and earned her first complete game win of the season. In seven innings, she allowed two hits, walked two, hit two, and struck out five. She stranded six Saints on the basepaths. Â
Â
The Yellowjackets pulled away slowly, getting one in the second, two in the third, and three more in the fourth. The top run producer was
Bailey Nicholoff. She drove in two runs on one sacrifice fly, then tripled home Kim in the sixth inning.
Bryce West and
Madi Turner each had RBIs.
Keys fanned eight in game two.
Rochester scored in the second.
Loren Castilloux doubled to left center. After a flyout,
Molly Mason grounded out on a deflection with Castilloux advancing to third. She scored on
Madi Turner's single to center. In the third,
Hannah Keiper walked.
Bryce West doubled to deep center with Keiper just beating the throw to the plate. West took third on the throw. She scored when
Hunter Gilbreath allowed herself to get in a rundown and avoided a tag long enough for West to score.
Â
Mason and
Alexis Klee singled around a putout in the fourth. Kim's grounder got away. It scored Mason, sent Klee to third, and allowed Kim to reach second base. Nicholoff hit a deep fly to center field – deep enough to score both Klee and Kim to score, boosting the lead to 6-0. Kim doubled with two outs in the sixth and came home on Nicholoff's triple.
Â
The loss went to Jacee Casebolt of SLYU. In three innings, she allowed three hits, three earne runs, walked four, and struck out two. Sofia Berryhill pitched the last three innings, yielding five hits, four runs (two earned), with no walks and one strikeout.
Â
Game Two:
Rochester 4, St. Lawrence 0:
The Saints reversed the pitching rotation in game two. Berryhill started and pitched the first three innings. She allowed five hits and two earned runs – solo home runs back to back – with one strikeout. She was relieved by Casebolt for the last three innings (three hits, two runs, two walks).
Â
In the UR third, Turner hit the first pitch she saw over the left field fence for a 1-0 lead. Three pitches later, Klee duplicated that shot for a 2-0 lead. UR threatened after that, but Berryhill would not be cowed. She and Casebolt (who came on in the fourth) stranded four runners. Rochester scored two more in the fifth. Kim singled, stole second and third. Keiper walked. She was forced on a groundout by West with Kim scoring.
Savannah Nowak ran for West and scored when Castilloux ripped a double down the left field line.
Â
Keys finished strongly. She retired nine of the last 10 she faced, six by strikeout. She struck out one in the fifth, two in the sixth, then fanned three in the seventh after allowing a single to the first hitter. It was her third complete game and her first shutout.
