SOUTHSIDE FIELD – Rochester's softball sweep of Fredonia State on Tuesday afternoon provided plenty of positive numbers: (1) Head coach
Margaret Yerdon-Grange earned her 300
th career win in game one; (2) Rochester broke its record for consecutive wins;; (3) First-year
Christin Napierkowski pitched a workmanlike two-hitter for the victory in the opener.
Â
The Yellowjackets won the opener, 7-0, thanks to a 55-pitch effort by Napierkowski. She faced three batters over the limit. UR took the second game, 11-2, with a seven-run first inning. The win streak is now 18 games. Rochester is 20-12 overall. Fredonia is 11-23.
Â
Game One
Rochester 7, Fredonia 0:
Napierkowski used an economical 55 pitches over seven innings to get the win. She struck out three, had two flyouts (one an infield pop), and produced 16 outs on ground balls. She retired eight of the first nine (Nicole Kumro singled in the second). An error put one runner on with two down in the third, but she induced a groundout. After a leadoff single in the fifth, she retired nine straight to end it. She never got to a 3-ball count on any of the hitters.
Â
Rochester scored in each of the first six innings. The Yellowjackets got solo HRs from
Madi Turner (with one down in the second) and
Bryce West (one down in the sixth).
Hannah Keiper singled home
Ally Kim in the first (after an HBP and two stolen bases), then singled in
Bailey Nicholoff who doubled in the third. After the double, Keiper singled to left and advanced to second when the Blue Devils threw home, trying to get Nicholoff at the plate.
West homered in game one.
Â
West's flyball to left was dropped and pinch-runner
Katherine Nee moved to third. She scored when a relay throw was wild. It produced an unearned run and sent West all the way to third base.
Â
In the fourth,
Molly Mason reached on a throwing error with one out. She stole second and moved to third on
Alexis Klee's groundout. Kim bunted for a single and when the throw got away, she ran to second. Mason scored, unearned, and Kim added a second unearned run in the inning on Nicholoff's single.
Â
The win was Napierkowski's second this season. She also has four saves. Vanessa Galbraith took the loss. She gave up seven hits, seven runs (four earned), and fanned five.
Â
Game Two
Rochester 11, Fredonia 2:
Rochester broke it open early, scoring seven runs – all earned – on six hits and two walks. Galbraith relieved in the first inning and pitched the last 3.1 innings before the mercy rule ended the contest after four and a half innings.
Â
Allison Beckwith had three RBIs and Klee had two. Five others had single RBIs – Kim, Nicholoff,
Loren Castilloux, Turner, and
Savannah Nowak. In the first, Kim singled, stole second (she had five on the day), and eventually scored on a passed ball. Beckwith doubled in two runs and Klee later in the inning tripled to right, scoring two more.
Â
UR added three runs in the second on a walk and three hits – including doubles by Castilloux and Nowak. Nicholoff's short sac fly to right field brought home the last run in the third.
Â
Abbie Biggs earned the complete game win, her sixth victory this year. She allowed five hits, two earned runs, walked three and struck out six.
