Seniors Shine In Regular Season Finale Against RIT

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – On a sunny and picture perfect senior day, several University of Rochester baseball seniors had standout games in a 12-3 victory over the Rochester Institute of Technology on Sunday afternoon to close out the regular season.

The victory closes out the weekend series, with Rochester winning two of the three games. UR ends the regular season with a 27-9 overall record and league-best 14-3 mark in conference games. RIT drops to 17-17 overall and is 7-10 in Liberty League contests.

Rochester jumped on the visiting Tigers early, plating five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Brian McKinsey laced a single to center, scoring two runs. Jacob Matzat added a sacrifice fly, Dan Tirabassi scored on an RIT error and Harper Sy came home on a wild pitch.

The runs were plenty for Rochester starting pitcher Trevor Van Allen, as the senior tossed five frames of one run ball, giving up just two hits. He walked three and struck out four in moving to 7-0 on the season.

In the fourth, Rochester put up another five spot, boosting the lead to 10-0. McKinsey had another RBI single, Tirabassi tripled to right, bringing in two runs and Sy homered to left field driving in two.

McKinsey was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI.

RIT got on the board in the sixth when Chris Reilly homered to left, hitting a 2-run shot for the second game in a row for the Tigers.

UR got those runs right back in the bottom of the inning though, as Matzat hit a solo home run to left center and Alec Ellison added an RBI single to left.

In relief of Van Allen, grad student Jake Larson tossed three solid innings on the mound. He allowed three hits and one run while striking out a season-high four batters.

During the ninth, RIT scraped a run across against Matthew Grier, getting an RBI single from Patrick Blackall to reach the final score of 12-3.

Offensively, seniors McKinsey and Sy led the Yellowjackets with three hits each. McKinsey drove in three RBI and had two runs and two steals, while Sy launched the home run and added two runs and two RBI.

Ellison finished 2-for-4 with an RBI while Tirabassi had two RBI and two runs. Matzat finished 1-for-3 with the HR and two RBI.

Prior to the game, UR's seniors and graduate students were honored along with their families for a job well done over their collegiate careers. The senior baseball class of 2022 featured Tyler Brock, Matt Cappelletti, Beth Greenwood, Larson, Matzat, McKinsey, Luke Piontek, student assistant Luke Polson, Joseph Rende, Spencer Rojahn, Harper Sy and Van Allen.

Rochester now looks ahead to the Liberty League Crossover series taking place next weekend at Towers Field against Rensselaer. The Saturday-Sunday, best of three series will send one of the two teams to the four-team double-elimination Liberty League Championship tournament set for the following week.
