GENESEO, NY – University of Rochester women's soccer shutout the 25th-ranked SUNY Geneseo Knights, 2-0, on Thursday at College Stadium in their 2022 season opener.
Becca Rust got the start in goal for the Yellowjackets, but UR's defense held the Knights to just six shots and one on goal in the first half.
Offensively,
Grace Regenstreif picked up the first shot of the year for the Yellowjackets just over 13 minutes into the first period, but Angel Bennett made one of her five saves, keeping UR off the scoreboard early.
Neither side would get much going until the 37th minute when, off a free kick,
Mia McGinty found
Lauren Carrico in the box, and the freshman headed into the top right corner of the net for her first career goal, and to give UR a 1-0 lead.
The Knights looked to counter and tie things up before the end of the first half, but a pair of shots went wide, and the Yellowjackets headed into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.
UR then came out striking to start the second half, as
Savannah Berry and
Sarah Martin's shot fell just wide before
Liv Penegor looked to make it 2-0, but another Bennett save kept Rochester's lead at just a goal.
Grace Kuropatkin, who started the second half in place of Rust, picked up her first of two saves on the afternoon just over six minutes into the second half, before the 'Jackets put together another volley of shots, looking to take a 2-0 lead.
Emma Bates' 60th-minute shot was blocked, while McGinty forced Bennett to make another save just seconds later.
But with 7:03 remaining, and after
Claire Grover's first shot was blocked, but on the rebound, the junior stroked it past the keeper to extend UR's lead to 2-0.
And while the Knights turned up the offensive pressure late, Kuropatkin kept SUNY Geneseo off the scoreboard the rest of the way to finish off the shutout victory.
With the win, Rochester moves to 1-0 on the year, while SUNY Geneseo falls to 0-1.
Head Coach
Ashley Van Vechten picks up her first win as UR's Head Women's Soccer Coach, starting her first year 1-0.
Carrico and Grover each notched goals for UR, while McGinty tallied the lone assist, adding a team-high three shots on goal.
In the net for Rochester, Kuropatkin and Rust combined for three saves.
The Yellowjackets next head to Cortland, N.Y. for a matchup against the Red Dragons on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 1 p.m.
