Volleyball Wraps up UAA Round Robin #1 with Loss to CWRU

ST. LOUIS, MO – University of Rochester women's volleyball fell to the Case Western Reserve University Spartans, 3-0, in their final match of the first University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin, hosted by Washington University in St. Louis, on Sunday morning at WU Field House.

After a competitive, back-and-forth start to the opening set, CWRU notched three straight to open up a 10-7 lead. UR rallied back to pull within one on Sonia McGaffigan's kill, but four-in-a-row from the Spartans brought Case Western Reserve's lead out to five.

Down 15-10, UR used a timeout, but the Spartans would pull away, going up seven on Sara Rogers' ace, before finishing off the set with a 3-0 run on a pair of kills by Jennifer Ngo to take set one, 25-18.

The Spartans then jumped out to a large lead early in set two, scoring the first four points of the set and leading by as many as six in the early going.

Julia Chotiner's kill pulled UR back within four, but with a 6-0 run, Case Western Reserve pulled away.

The Yellowjackets rallied, scoring five straight off Katie Westerheim's serve and forcing CWRU to take a timeout. But the Spartans slowed the 'Jackets' roll with a 4-0 run of their own, pulling away to eventually take the second set, 25-16.

The Spartans then raced out to another early lead in the third set, going up by seven, 16-9, on a bad set to force UR to take a timeout. CWRU would add five of the next six out of the timeout to take an 11-point, 21-10, lead, before scoring the last three points of the match to finish off the sweep, 25-13.

With the loss, UR drops to 6-5 (0-3 UAA) on the year, while the Spartans move to 9-3 (1-2 UAA).

McGaffigan led all hitters with 11 kills, while Alexia Nelms tallied a game-high 24 assists.

Defensively, Areti Tsirikaki notched a team-high 11 digs, while Ana Cerezer added 10.

The Yellowjackets will look to get back in the win column when they travel to Henrietta, NY on Wednesday, Sept. 21 for a mid-week matchup against RIT at 6 p.m.
