OSWEGO, NY – The University of Rochester field hockey team scored a pair of goals in the opening four minutes and made the lead stand up in a 2-0 victory over host Oswego State on Tuesday evening at Laker Turf Stadium.
Rochester moves to 6-2 with the victory, while the Lakers drop to 5-2.
UR's goals were scored on the teams first three shots.
Anya Arseneau found the cage one minute into the game, with
Maeve Fogarty recording a goal three minutes later off a rebound.
Rochester keeper
Helen Schmitter made four saves in goal to earn the shutout, with the Yellowjackets outshooting the Lakers 19-4 on the night. Oswego State's keeper Erica Scheblein made 12 saves in the loss.
The Yellowjackets got things going quickly gaining possession early and earning a penalty corner just 48 seconds into the contest. On the ensuing corner, the ball swung around to
Bella Militi who tapped the ball over to Arseneau for the opening tally.
Three minutes later, Rochester earned another corner and turned it into a 2-0 lead. The ball was sent in to
Vivianna Arnold at the edge of the circle on the right wing where she unleashed a hard backhand shot that was saved.
Fogarty, camping in traffic in front of the net, scooped up the rebound and slipped her shot past the pads of Scheblein for the 2-0 Rochester lead.
Rochester dominated the rest of the quarter, not allowing a shot, while earning two more corners.
In the second, Oswego mounted a rally late in the quarter, earning a pair of penalty corners surrounding three straight shots, which were all saved away by Schmitter in goal.
In the first two minutes after intermission, Rochester's Areseneau had a shot attempt in close, but Scheblein was able to make the save.
Oswego State earned two yellow cards in the 36th minute and were playing two players down for the next few minutes. Rochester couldn't capitalize with the extra players though, as the score remained 2-0.
Rochester's Arnold had three straight chances in the 39th and 40th minutes, but Scheblein again thwarted the goal scoring opportunities.
Oswego's final shot attempt of the game came late in the third quarter off the stick of Kacie Simzer following a penalty corner, with Schmitter making the save to keep the Lakers off the board.
After a couple days off, Rochester returns to the field this Friday for a home contest at 5 pm against William Smith to open the Liberty League portion of the schedule.
