Women’s Soccer Bounces Back with 5-0 Home Win over Houghton

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – For the fourth time this season, University of Rochester women's soccer put up a five-spot, as the Yellowjackets defeated Houghton University, 5-0, on Tuesday at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

The 'Jackets dominated Tuesday's non-conference matchup from the get-go, with three shots in the first 10 minutes, including Savannah Berry's shot on goal, the first of the game for UR, forcing one of Megan Merrifield's seven saves.

UR peppered Merrifield early and often with 12 first-half shots and 25 total, 13 of which went on goal.

Claire Grover added another shot on goal for the Yellowjackets in the 23rd minute, before finding the back of the net just minutes later to get the scoring started. Carolyn Richards made a nice run down the right side and centered it for Grover, who scored her ninth goal of the year from six yards out to give Rochester a 1-0 lead.

Houghton would look to counter, as Natalie Milne picked up the Highlanders' first shot on goal on the evening, but Grace Kuropatkin made one of her two saves to keep UR out in front.

Kuropatkin would add another save before the end of the half, while Merrifield would add two more, keeping UR from extending their lead any further before the first-half whistle.

But the Yellowjackets came out hot out of the locker room and quickly added to their lead.

In the 52nd minute, Grace Regenstreif launched in a corner, and Megan Pung headed it into the back of the net, notching her first goal of the year to extend Rochester's lead to 2-0.

After a pair of shots by Mia McGinty and Lauren Carrico went wide, Syd Coggins made it 3-0 in the 58th minute off Richards' second assist of the day. Off another run, this time down the near sideline, Richards found Coggins in the center of the box to give UR a 3-0 advantage.

And the 'Jackets wouldn't stop there, extending their lead to 4-0 as they capitalized off another set piece in the 62nd minute. Off McGinty's corner, Grover notched her second goal of the day and 10th of the year, finding the back of the net with her right foot to make it a four-goal lead.

UR would then make it 5-0 just minutes later when Casmira Fox found Carly Fields on another corner, and Fields dropped a beauty into the top, right corner of the net to extend UR's lead.

In total, Rochester scored three of their five goals on corners, with the other two coming on runs by Richard down the sideline.

Down the stretch, the Yellowjackets continued the offensive pressure, putting three more shots on goal before the final horn sounded with Rochester up 5-0.

Rochester moves to 5-1-3, bouncing back from their first loss of the year with the win, while Houghton drops to 4-3-2 with the loss.

Eight different Yellowjackets recorded a point, led by Grover's two goals, and Richards' two assists. Coggins, Fields and Pung each added a goal, while Fox, McGinty and Regenstreif tallied assists.

Offensively, Pung led UR with four shots, while Grover, Robin de Jong and Richards each tallied three. In goal for Rochester, Kuropatkin picked up another win and a clean sheet, tallying two saves, while Gabby Sabatier didn't face a shot over the final 45 minutes.

As a team, Rochester outshot Houghton, 25-2, and held the Highlanders without a corner, with 10 themselves.

The Yellowjackets next open University Athletic Association conference play on Sunday, Oct. 2 against the University of Chicago at 1:30 p.m. at home at Fauver Stadium.
