BROCKPORT, NY – Behind
Claire Grover's program record five goals and 11 points, University of Rochester women's soccer raced past SUNY Brockport, 7-1, on Wednesday at Dr. Linda Arena Field.
Grover got things started quickly for the Yellowjackets, as they put the pressure on Madeline McCrosson and the Brockport defense right from the get-go.
Grover's first shot just a minute and five seconds into the match went wide, while
Mia McGinty got UR's first shot on target just over four minutes into the match.
A little over 10 minutes later, McGinty connected with Grover on her first of three assists, tying a program record, as Grover hauled in a terrific pass and beat the keeper to make it 1-0 with her 16th-minute goal.
And just over a minute later, Grover found the back of the net once again, again off McGinty's pass to make it 2-0 Yellowjackets in the 17th minute.
But Grover wouldn't stop there, as the junior finished off her hat trick in the 20th minute, this time off
Emma Cohen's assist, to make it 3-0 UR just over 19 minutes into the match.
On the other end of the field,
Grace Kuropatkin and Rochester's defense held the Golden Eagles to just one first-half shot, and the Yellowjackets headed into halftime with a three-goal lead.
Grover then came back onto the field to start the second half and quickly got back on the scoreboard.
McGinty arced in a pass just beyond the reach of two Golden Eagle defenders, setting up Grover, who just stayed onside and beat the keeper for her fourth goal with 39:23 to play.
And after Julia Mascaro's shot went wide for Brockport, UR countered on the other end, as
Syd Coggins found McGinty who found Grover streaking down the middle of the field for her fifth goal of the day, setting a new program record with a little under 36 minutes to play.
Grover would then add an assist as
Emma Bates joined in on the action, making it 6-0 in the 61st minute, before
Sarah Martin added to UR's tally, as she converted the 63rd-minute penalty kick, extending Rochester's lead to 7-0.
The Yellowjackets continued their offensive pressure outshooting the Golden Eagles, 23-9 over the entire match, before Brockport got on the scoreboard late, ending UR's shutout on Maryalice Skutnik's 79th-minute goal.
Gabby Sabatier would pick up another save down the stretch, one of five for the first year in the second half, as Rochester finished off a 7-1 victory.
With the win, UR remains undefeated at 2-0-1 on the year, while Brockport drops to 0-2-1.
Grover with her five goals and one assist, set program records for goals and points in a match, while McGinty tied a program record with her three assists.
Coggins and Cohen each added an assist, while Bates and Martin each tallied goals.
Grover led UR with six shots, while as a team, UR tallied 23 shots, 14 of which were on goal.
In goal for UR, Kuropatkin didn't face a shot on goal, while Sabatier started the second half and recorded six saves.
Rochester next opens its 2022 home slate against Alfred University on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 12 p.m. at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
