‘Jackets Score 2-0, Midweek Win over SUNY Brockport

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – University of Rochester field hockey defeated the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles in their penultimate non-conference game of the season, 2-0, on a chilly, Fall Wednesday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

The Yellowjackets outshot Brockport, 31-4, and 17-1 on goal, tallying nine shots in each of the final three quarters en route to the win, UR's 11th of the season.

Bella Militi got things going, offensively, for the Yellowjackets in the opening period, with a pair of early shots at Ella Buchanan, but the Golden Eagles' junior goalkeeper kept Rochester off the scoreboard, making the first two of her 15 total saves.

Just under six minutes in, Maeve Fogarty added another shot on goal in the opening period, which was again saved by Buchanan, while Quinn Guy tallied the lone shot of the quarter for Brockport. The junior deflected one towards the goal with 4:58 left in the first, but Kara Houston kept it out of goal, and UR and Brockport would remain scoreless after one.

In the second quarter, the 'Jackets revved up their offense to the tune of nine shots, starting with Zoe Conomikes' wide shot in the 16th minute, followed by Anya Arseneau and Fogarty's a little over a minute later.

Buchanan saved Arseneau's right-wing shot, and while Fogarty tried to tap in the rebound, Paige Thowe came up with the defensive save, knocking the ball out of midway to keep UR off the scoreboard.

The Golden Eagles then picked up the game's first corner, but Rochester's defense blocked Gianna Salerno's shot to prevent any damage.

In the 26th minute, the Yellowjackets again looked to break the scoreless tie, as Fogarty fired one from about eight yards out on goal, and Arseneau nearly tipped in the rebound, but instead, it caromed off the post to keep things scoreless.

Finally, though, just 40 seconds later, the Yellowjackets would take the lead as Conomikes scored off a deflected pass from Fogarty, making it a 1-0 UR advantage.

The Yellowjackets would take their 1-0 lead into the halftime break and came out and dominated the third period, outshooting Brockport, 9-0 as they looked to add to their tally.

Arseneau took the 'Jackets first shot of the period just 56 seconds in, sending one wide, while back-to-back penalty corners led to shots on goal from Fogarty and Arseneau, both of which were saved.

Buchanan made another save on another Arseneau shot in the 36th minute, setting up the Yellowjackets' fifth penalty corner of the night. Off the corner, Vivianna Arnold smashed a blast on goal, while Fogarty just missed to make it 2-0, flicking one high at the net.

Fogarty and Arseneau saw another pair of shots blocked and go wide in the 39th minute, before the Yellowjackets broke through again, this time at the 42:50 mark of the third.

Mara Heppard drove into the right side, bringing out the Brockport keeper before firing a pass across the face of the goal. And with Buchanan out of position, Militi was there for an easy tap-in to give Rochester a two-goal lead.

That 2-0 lead would hold up the rest of the way, as UR continued to send volley after volley on goal, adding nine more shots, compared to just one for Brockport, in the final frame.

After three early fourth-quarter shots were blocked, Conomikes forced a save with her 50th-minute blast, while Jessica Unkel sent one wide just over a minute later.

Conomikes would add another shot on goal in the 53rd minute before Militi and Fogarty forced another pair of saves in the final five minutes.

Brockport would tally a corner of its own before the final buzzer sounded, but Kelsey Zehr's shot was blocked, allowing the Yellowjackets to finish off the 2-0 victory.

The win moves Rochester to 11-6 on the year, while Brockport falls to 10-5.

Fogarty led UR with nine shots, including five on goal, and tallied an assist, while Conomikes added seven and a score and Arseneau and Militi each tallied six.

Arseneau's six shots were a career-high, while Militi put five of her six on goal, including her score. Heppard picked up the 'Jackets' other assist, while Houston made one save, facing a total of four shots.

Rochester next resumes conference play on Friday, Oct. 20, traveling to Canton, NY for a Liberty League contest against St. Lawrence at 4:00 p.m.
