Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ari Ross, Assistant Director of Athletic Communications

Late Goal Deals UR 1-0 Loss vs. NYU

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Though they outshot the Violets, 20-8, University of Rochester men's soccer fell to the New York University Violets, 1-0 on Friday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

The Yellowjackets would pepper the goal early and often against NYU, with 10 shots in both the first and second. But just four were on goal, while the visitors put five of their eight on net, including the game-winner at the 75-minute mark.

After UR fended off an early corner kick for the Violets, the 'Jackets earned a corner of their own and three times nearly broke through.

Jeremiah Anandarajah headed Ashton Prescott's corner over to Kol Bassuk, who nearly scored if not for Chaz Bond's save, while Charlie Shanks sent back the rebound, but a team save by Ben Trask again kept UR out of the goal.

Tyler Moran then sent a third volley wide right, while eight minutes later, Joe Anderson and Phillip Davis combined to put some more pressure on NYU's defense. Anderson's first attempt was blocked, while Davis' header after the 'Jackets sent the ball back in soared just over the top of the goal, keeping things deadlocked at 0-0.

Then in the 19th minute, Santi Ponce Ocampo got by a Violet defender and nearly curled his right-footed shot in goal, but Bond just got his hand on it, setting up a UR corner.

Following another UR corner in the 25th minute, Avi Lamba found some space and sent one wide, while Nathan Bennett earned the Violets' first shot in the 30th minute, forcing the first of Santino Lupica-Tondo's four saves.

UR would add three more shots and two more corners down the stretch of the first half, but they just couldn't quite break through. Shots from Moran and Will Falona went wide, while Prescott's 44th-minute attempt was blocked, sending the two sides scoreless into the halftime break.

The Violets then started to pick things up in the second, with Arkan Tahsildaroglu forcing another save in the 53rd minute, while Fallona and Elijose Araujo both missed wide in a minute stretch.

The 'Jackets tallied two more corner kicks and two more shots over the next 15 minutes, while NYU added two of their own, including Eric Smits' 61st-minute attempt that forced Lupica-Tondo to make another save.

In the 76th minute though, the Violets broke through, as Tahsildaroglu's cross found Bennett in front of the goal by the far, and the junior beat Lupica-Tondo with a left-footed shot to the inside post, giving NYU a 1-0 lead.

Rochester would have its opportunities to equalize down the stretch, tallying five more shots and five more corners over the final 15, but the 'Jackets just couldn't push one through.

In the 83rd minute of a UR corner, Fallona nearly capitalized on a loose ball in the box, with Bond just getting a hand on the first-year's right-footed volley. While on the ensuing throw-in, the 'Jackets attempted a trio of shots, with NYU's defense blocking the first two from Prescott and Joe Anderson, while Fallona's was sent high for a goal kick.

In the 90th minute, the 'Jackets had another opportunity following a foul from NYU, but Prescott again saw his shot blocked, and time expired with the Violets still leading, 1-0.

UR drops to 6-2-5 (0-2-2 UAA) with the loss, while NYU moves to 5-5-3 (3-1 UAA) with the win.

Fallona and Prescott each led the 'Jackets with four shots, while Moran added three. Lupica-Tondo played all 90 minutes in goal, making four saves.

Rochester will look to bounce back when they host Brandeis to wrap up the weekend on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1:30 p.m. at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
