ST. LOUIS – The University of Rochester made the most of its limited scoring chances, connecting on a single second half goal to post a 1-0 road victory at Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday in a late season UAA conference contest.
The 1-0 win is Rochester's second straight, pushing the Yellowjackets record to 8-2-5 overall and 2-2-2 in UAA play. The eight conference points has Rochester tied for fourth in the UAA with one game remaining, set for Saturday against league champion Emory University.
Senior
Santi Ponce Ocampo scored the goal for UR in the 66th minute and the defensive unit and goalkeeper
Santino Lupica-Tondo fended off a Washington-St. Louis attack to finish off the shutout, Rochester's fifth of the season and third in the last four games. Lupica-Tondo ended with five saves in goal.
Overall in the game, WashU maintained most of the possession and finished with an 18-3 shot advantage, also taking eight of the ten corner kicks in the contest.
During the first half, the host Bears (7-7-1, 2-4-0 UAA) threatened first, with Owen Culver taking a curling left wing shot on frame at the 1:13 mark, but Lupica-Tondo was there for the save. A little over a minute later, Ethan Wirtschafter had his attempt from the right side outside of the 18 get blocked away.
The Yellowjackets were limited to a single shot attempt in the opening half, coming off the foot of Ponce Ocampo in the 21st minute shortly after Rochester's first corner kick of the game. The attempt sailed wide after a scramble in front from eight yards inside the box on the right side.
With under 14 minutes left in the first half, the Bears earned three straight corner kicks, but only could muster one shot, coming on the third corner, with Carter Sasser's chance getting sent wide.
After intermission, Washington-St. Louis held the early advantage, earning several shots and corners in the opening eight minutes, but were unable to generate a scoring play, keeping the game scoreless. Lupica-Tondo came up with a save on Wirtschafter in the 48th minute.
On a counter in the 66th minute, the Yellowjackets broke the tie with a goal from Ponce Ocampo, his team-leading seventh of the season. The ball came up the midfield through
EliJose Araujo who sent a pass up the right sideline to
Will Fallona.
Fallona sent a service in front towards a streaking 'Jacket attacker with Ponce Ocampo waiting at the far side unmarked. The UR senior settled the pass and took a wide open left foot shot and converted for the 1-0 lead.
After the UR goal, Washington looked to answer back, earning a couple good looks off free kicks in the next few minutes, but the Yellowjacket defense again came up with some strong plays in clearing away the chances.
With a little over 15 minutes left, a ball got sent up to Fallona who outran a Bears defender and nearly had a breakaway 1-on-1 chance with WashU keeper Cal L'Hommedieu, but WashU's defender recovered just in time and made the tackle, breaking up the UR first-year's chance.
With under three minutes on the clock,
Tyler Moran took a rocket shot from 25 yards out in the center of the field, but his look was caught near the left side of the net by L'Hommedieu for the save.
As time ticked away, the Bears had a terrific chance with under 30 seconds left, but a left foot volley off a scramble by Culver was slid just wide right of the cage.
