HOUGHTON, NY – The #12 University of Rochester women's soccer team put on a dominant performance, peppering a season-high 28 shot attempts in a 4-1 road victory over Houghton University on Tuesday night at Burke Field.
Rochester remains unbeaten with the victory, pushing its record to 8-0-2 on the 2023 season. That mark is the first time the Yellowjackets have gone ten games without a loss to start a season since back in 2006 when UR also started 8-0-2.
Overall, Rochester finished with a dominant effort all around, outshooting the host Highlanders (3-6-1) 28-2 for the game. UR also led 5-2 in corner kicks.
The Yellowjackets got the game off to a quick start, testing Houghton goalkeeper Alliah Fluent just 11 seconds after the opening kickoff, with
Mia McGinty firing a strike on the keeper.
Rochester ended up capitalizing on a Houghton own goal for the early 1-0 lead just 2:33 into the game.
Less than four minutes later,
Sarah Martin found teammate
Sydney Holmes for a 2-0 lead. Holmes, a first-year, now has three goals on the season, tied for second most on the Yellowjackets.
Houghton looked to counter, earning one of its two corner kicks in the eighth minute, but Rochester's back line was able to defend the chance without any shots.
Rochester continued to push into the Highlander offensive zone, with
Katharina Probst and
Jordyn Kowalkowski getting shots on goal in the 41st minute, but Fluent was there for a pair of saves. Probst finished with a game-high five shot attempts, two of which were on target.
In the goal, Fluent made 15 saves for Houghton.
A minute later, Houghton was able to get off its first shot attempt of the game, with Anna Huizenga directing the ball at goal from the middle of the box, but the Yellowjacket defense had the play covered and blocked the shot away.
Less than a minute into the second half, Rochester increased its lead to 3-0 on a goal from another first-year,
Lauren Blanch. A ball was sent up the middle of the field to
Claire Grover who sent a pass across to an unmarked Blanch in the box. The UR rookie took a couple dribbles to her right to find space and fired a hard shot into the goal, notching her third tally of the season.
Less than five minutes later, Blanch had another golden opportunity to score off a corner kick, but her turnaround shot two yards off the goal line sailed wide right.
Martin kept the Yellowjacket offensive surge going in the 59th minute, finding space and cracking a hard attempt towards the top of the goal, but a leaping Fluent saved the ball away.
Just past the 60-minute mark, UR's Grover scored her tenth goal of the season, slamming in a rebound opportunity after
Natalie Kocsis' shot was saved. Grover's goal was her 29th career marker, moving the senior into a tie for sixth place all-time in the Rochester women's soccer record book.
UR continued its look to pile on, with
Syd Coggins nearly netting a goal in the 67th minute, but her header attempt at the left post following a long cross from the right side just was directed wide.
As the timer ticked down, Houghton's Aivery Shuck was able to slip a shot past UR's
Gabby Sabatier into the net, avoiding the shutout. Rochester's
Grace Kuropatkin played the opening 71 minutes and did not have to make a save.
Up next for the Yellowjackets is a stiff test on the road, taking on #1 ranked Carnegie Mellon Unviersity in a pivotal UAA conference battle on Saturday morning.
