Rochester Blanks Vassar, 1-0, For Second League Win

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – University of Rochester field hockey picked up its second Liberty League win and five shutout of the season, defeating the Vassar College Brewers, 1-0, on Saturday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

While the Brewers would get the first shot of the game off, a shot from Hailey Brigger that Kara Houston kicked wide, UR's defense would hold the Vassar to just two shots the entire contest.

The Yellowjackets dominated possession in the midfield and their offensive third for much of the contest, with Maeve Fogarty taking UR's first shot off a 10th-minute penalty corner.

Mara Heppard inserted the corner for Rochester, and Fogarty deflected Zoe Conomikes' blast, but Grace Wiley came up with the save.

A couple minutes later, Conomikes fired another pair at Wiley, but the first-year saved Conomikes' first shot, while Heidi Compton kept the senior's second out of the back of the net for a defensive save.

Rochester would add another shot in the second, a 27th-minute volley from Anya Arseneau that was blocked, before heading into halftime with the game scoreless.

But just over three minutes into the third, the Yellowjackets would break through and find their lone goal of the night.

Moving towards the end line, Conomikes smashed the ball into the box, where it deflected out for Fogarty, who flicked it into the back of the net to give UR a 1-0 lead.

That'd be all Rochester would need, but the 'Jackets would still look for more, with another penalty corner and a shot from Delainey Hebble that went wide in the 41st minute.

Vassar would get a shot off in the final moments of the third, with Karina Hoffman bouncing one towards goal, but Houston came up to make the save.

Rochester would take its 1-0 lead into the final frame, and hold Vassar without another shot till the final buzzer.

On the other end, both Bella Militi and Conomikes would record shots on goal for UR in the fourth, with Militi tapping a pass from Jessica Unkel toward the goal, and Conomikes sending one in off a penalty corner. But Miley made saves on both to keep Rochester's lead at just one.

With the clock ticking towards zero, the Brewers put together a few passes to try to find one last opportunity, but the final horn sounded before Vassar could get a shot off, as the Yellowjackets finished off the 1-0 victory.

With the win, Rochester moves to 8-4 (2-1 LL) on the year, while Vassar falls to 7-4 (2-1 LL).

The Yellowjackets outshot Vassar, 9-2, and held the Brewers without a penalty corner, tallying five themselves. Conomikes and Fogarty each tallied a game-high three shots, with the duo connecting on Rochester's score.

It's a quick turnaround for the Yellowjackets as they wrap up Meliora Weekend on Sunday, Oct. 8 with a matchup against the 5th-ranked Tufts University Jumbos at 3:00 p.m. at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
