POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – A tough early season matchup for the University of Rochester men's tennis team saw host Vassar College post a 9-0 victory over the Yellowjackets on Friday evening at the Walker Field House.
The Yellowjackets (1-1) were matched up well in doubles, with two of the three matches being separated by just three games.
Vassar (2-0) took the opening point at third doubles with an 8-3 win from Benjamin Almquist and Sigmund Winiecki over
Kenneth Lee and
Kei Ogawa.
Rochester's other two doubles teams,
Kai Yuminaga and
Rahul Ravi at number one and
Krish Vennam and
Kavin Shukla at number two fought hard in their losses to their Brewers opponents.
The Vassar number two team of Arnav Agostinho and Pedro Cattaruzzi won 8-5 over Vennam and Shukla, with Yuminaga and Ravi falling 8-6 to Fernando Bauermeiste and Nolan Kubiak at the top spot, sending the Brewers into singles with the 3-0 lead.
In the individual matchups, Rochester's lone set winner was Yuminaga at the #1 position against Bauermeiste. After getting blanked 6-0 in the opening set, Yuminaga showed his resilience in fighting back in the second, posting a 7-5 win, leading to a super tiebreaker in the third. Bauermeiste steadied the ship, earning the win 10-3 to keep Vassar's perfect night going.
Kubiak defeated Shukla 6-0, 6-2 at third singles and Agostinho topped Ravi 6-2, 6-2 at number four to earn Vassar's first two points in singles, clinching the team match.
James Balon followed with a win over Ogawa at fifth singles (6-0, 6-1) and Benjamin Alquist battled Vennam at number two, winning 6-2, 6-4 for Vassar. After the Yuminaga-Bauermeiste battle at the top spot, Ethan Mantell completed the sweep for the Brewers, defeating
Surya Rajamani 6-1, 6-2 at number six.
Rochester is back in action on Saturday evening, playing at #22 ranked Rensselaer at 6:30 pm.
