Quick Start, Strong Finish Lift Rochester Past Nazareth

PITTSFORD, NY – The University of Rochester women's lacrosse team opened its season with a 10-5 victory over Nazareth College on Saturday afternoon at NLLPA Field.
 
Senior Lucy Haggerty led the Yellowjackets with five points on the day, scoring a hat trick while also dishing out a pair of assists.
 
Alyssa Gorny and Gracie Giannettino each scored two goals for the Yellowjackets while Anne Traczyk, Emma Little and Grace Crochiere scored one. Crochiere ended up with a game-high four draw controls for the Yellowjackets as well.
 
In goal, Ava Saffren made ten stops for the Yellowjackets as the last line of defense. Also, leading the defensive unit were Traczyk and Christiana Ciaccio who had three caused turnovers each. Ciaccio led the Yellowjackets with five ground balls, with Traczyk picking up three.
 
Giannettino opened the scoring two and a half minutes in, with Haggerty and Gorny following suit in the next four minutes. After Haggerty's second goal late in the first, Rochester (1-0) led 4-0. Nazareth got a tally from Emma States late in the period to trail by three after the opening 15 minutes.
 
After a scoreless first seven minutes of the second quarter, Traczyk and Giannettino boosted the Yellowjackets lead to 6-1.
 
Nazareth (0-1) clawed back within two goals, trimming the deficit to two late in the third quarter, trailing 7-5, but Rochester's defense down the stretch proved to be the difference as the Golden Flyers were outscored 3-0 in the final stanza to earn the five-goal victory.
 
Little, Gorny and Crochiere provided the late insurance goals in the fourth, as UR limited the Golden Flyers to just one shot attempt over the final quarter.
 
Rochester's next contest is set for Wednesday at St. John Fisher University.
