Rochester Hangs 12 Runs On Whittier in Road Win

WHITTIER, CA – The University of Rochester offense broke out with 13 hits, including six for extra bases in a 12-8 win over Whittier College on Tuesday afternoon at Whittier's Mendez Stadium.

UR improves to 4-2 with the win, while Whittier falls to 1-10 on the season.

In Whittier's first at-bat, leadoff hitter Nathan Sherman doubled to immediately put a running in scoring position, but was quickly erased by a line out double-play from number two hitter Dane Goodman.

The bottom of UR's lineup provided two RBI singles in the top of the second, opening the scoring. After Josh Leadem singled and John Moses was hit by a pitch, Dan Tirabassi laced a triple to right scoring Leadem. Casey Press followed with an RBI single through the infield for the 2-0 lead.

The Poets scraped a run across in the third when Goodman lined a 2-out, RBI triple to left, cutting the deficit in half.

In the fourth, Moses cracked a solo home run to lead off the frame, putting Rochester on top 3-1. It was the senior catcher's seventh long ball of his career and first of the season.

Justin Grossman relieved for starter Colby Cruser in the fourth. Grossman pitched around two hits, including a leadoff double, and a walk in the inning, keeping the Poets off the board after getting a ground out to strand runners at second and third.

Cruser finished the game allowing one run on two hits and a pair of walks. He struck out three in three innings of work.

Rochester struck for four runs in the fifth to break open the game. Joseph Rende and Jackson Reed led off with back-to-back singles. Colton Avera lined a double to left to plate Rende. Reed and Avera the scored on another double from Leadem. Moses added a sacrifice fly to score Leadem who had stolen third, boosting the Yellowjacket lead to 7-1.

The Poets answered right away, plating three runs in the bottom of the inning, making UR's lead three at 7-4. Teige Barrett walked with the bases loaded, Lew Rice added an RBI single and Luis Charvarin Jr. added a sacrifice fly.

Dan Tirabassii
Tirabassi had two hits and three RBI.

After a scoreless sixth inning, the Yellowjackets tacked on three additional runs in the seventh. Robert Constantine singled to left, driving in Avera, while Tirabassi added a 2-run single to center.

Late in the game, Barrett blasted two solo home runs for the Poets, and Whittier added another two runs in the ninth, but Reed launched a two-run bomb of his own in Rochester's half of the ninth to reach the final score of 12-8.

Five Yelowjackets finished with multiple hits, as Leadem, Constantine and Tirabassi each went 2-for-4. Reed added a 2-for-5 game and Avera finished 2-for-6.

Tirabassi drove in three runs and had two steals while Leadem scored three times, added two RBI and chipped in a pair of steals. Reed scored twice and also drove in two.

Magnus Siverston picked up the win in relief for the Yellowjackets, throwing three innings while allowing 2 hits, 1 run and 1 walk while striking out three.

The two teams complete the 3-game series on Wednesday afternoon with a double header starting at 10 a.m. pacific time (1 p.m. eastern).
