ORLANDO, FL – University of Rochester men's tennis upset the 29th-ranked Haverford College Fords, 5-4, in a back-and-forth, thrilling match that featured four different tiebreakers on Wednesday afternoon at the USTA National Campus.
Krish Vennam and
Kavin Shukla got the Yellowjackets started in the second doubles with an 8-3 victory over Haverford's James McKenzie and Justin Minnerva, before the Fords' Aiden Kim and Max Beckwith evened the match at 1-1 with an 8-5 win in the third doubles over UR's
Surya Rajamani and
Kenneth Lee.
UR then picked up the final doubles match, first doubles, as
Rahul Ravi and
Kai Yuminaga defeated Stefan Johnson and Adam Chow, 8-5, to give the 'Jackets a 2-1 lead.
Minerva then got the Fords started in the six-spot, evening up the match at 2-all with a 6-0, 6-4, win over Lee. But Shukla battled back in the fourth singles, topping McKenzie, 6-2, 4-6, 10-7, to stretch UR's lead back out to 3-2.
Haverford would again knot things at three, with Johnson taking the second singles match over Yuminaga, 6-3, 6-1, before Vennam battled back from 2-5 in the second set of first singles to defeat Andreas Wingert, 1-6, 7-5, 10-2, and again put UR up a point.
Kim and the Fords again leveled the match at 4-all, as Kim took home the third singles match, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-8, battling back and winning a pair of tiebreakers to send the Fords and Yellowjackets to the final singles match, all tied up at 4-4.
Chow led
Kei Ogawa early, taking the first set, 6-4, in the five singles slot. Ogawa saved one match point in the second-set tiebreak, eventually picking up a marathon 7-6 (14-12) second-set victory before clinching the fifth singles match and a 5-4 UR victory with a 10-6 win in the super tiebreaker.
With the win, Rochester moves to 3-3 on the year, while No. 29 Haverford drops to 2-3 on the year.
Rochester wraps up its spring trip with a pair of victories and will look to make it three straight when they return to New York state for a matchup against Ithaca College on Wednesday, March 22 at 4 p.m. in Ithaca, NY.
