First-year pitcher
Molly Broccolo threw a no-hitter in game one, and the Yellowjackets outscored SUNY Brockport, 29-0 as the University of Rochester softball swept its Wednesday afternoon, non-conference doubleheader against the Golden Eagles at the Clark V. Whited Complex. Rochester took game one, 17-0, and game two, 12-0, both in a run-rule-shortened five innings.
The two wins make it 14-straight victories for UR as the 'Jackets move to 17-5 on the year, while SUNY Brockport falls to 3-15.
GAME ONE: Rochester 17, SUNY Brockport 0 (5 inn.)
Ally Kim led off the top of the first, drawing a hit-by-pitch and stealing second to move into scoring position.
Bailey Nicholoff quickly brought Kim home with an RBI double, and after Nicholoff took third on a wild pitch,
Hannah Keiper made it 2-0 with an RBI single to left.
After Keiper stole second and
Madi Turner was hit by a pitch,
Savannah Nowak brought in another run with an RBI double before
Molly Mason cleared the bases with a three-run blast, extending Rochester's lead to 6-0.
That would be all Broccolo needed, but not all UR would score, as the Webster, NY native struck out a pair to set down the Golden Eagles in order in the top of the first.
Rochester then put up another crooked number in the top of the second, as they scratched out four runs on three hits and two defensive miscues by Brockport to extend their lead to 10-0. Kim again led off the second and this time singled to left but was caught trying to steal second. Nicholoff followed with another single, this time stealing second safely before moving to third on Keiper's groundout.
Jenna Gorecki then walked and stole second, and Turner reached on the first of Brockport's two errors, allowing both Gorecki and Nicholoff to score to extend the lead to 8-0. Nowak followed with another double, this one to left field, to bring home Turner, before Mason reached on another Golden Eagle error, bringing home Nowak to make it a 10-0 Rochester advantage.
And after another 1-2-3 frame from Broccolo, UR added another run on Nicholoff's RBI double in the top of the third.
Broccolo kept on rolling, getting a trio of groundouts to work a 1-2-3 bottom of the frame, before UR added three more on Mason's RBI single and
Hunter Gilbreath's two-run shot to take a 14-0 lead.
The first-year then worked a 1-2-3 fourth, staying perfect through four with just one ball leaving the infield, a flyout by Kellie Gentile to finish off the bottom of the fourth.
In the top of the fifth, Turner's RBI single and Mason's two-run double made it a 17-0 ballgame, before Broccolo took a perfect game into the bottom of the fifth. And while Jenna Downey spoiled Broccolo's perfect-game bid with a leadoff walk, Broccolo got Annie Dipirro to ground into a double play to still face the minimum and finish off the no-hitter.
Broccolo's no-hitter is the first of the Webster, NY native's career, and UR's no-hitter since
Lauren Keys held Union without a hit on April 29, 2022.
Broccolo (9-2) earned the win, walking one and striking out four over 5.0 innings pitched, setting down 15 batters on just 45 pitches. Fiona Gibiser (2-7) took the loss for Brockport, allowing 17 runs, 13 earned, on 15 hits, over 5.0 innings pitched.
Mason, Nicholoff and Nowak each tallied three hits, with Mason going 3-for-4 with a double, home run, two runs scored and six RBI, Nicholoff going 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI and Nowak going 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI.
As a team, Rochester tallied 17 runs on 15 hits, walking once and striking out just twice.
GAME TWO: Rochester 12, SUNY Brockport (5 inn.)
A pair of one-out walks and a Brockport error loaded the bases for UR in the top of the first inning of game two, bringing up Turner, who took a hit-by-pitch to bring home the game's first run and give the 'Jackets a 1-0 lead.
Jensen Sminchak then brought home another run with a walk, before Mason added another with an RBI groundout, giving the 'Jackets a 3-0 lead after one.
And while Erin Dougherty would leadoff the bottom of the first for the Golden Eagles with an infield single, preventing
Maddie White from matching Broccolo's earlier feat, the Langley, VA native worked around Doughtery's leadoff single to keep Brockport off the scoreboard, and held SUNY Brockport to just four hits over 5.0 innings pitched.
UR would add three more runs in the top of the second, loading the bases on a hit-by-pitch, walk and fielder's choice, before Simchak, Mason and Gilbreath all brought home runs with a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch to extend Rochester's lead to 6-0.
And after White set the Golden Eagles down in order, striking out a pair in the bottom of the second, the 'Jackets added four more in the top of the third.
Kim led off with an infield single and stole second, before Nicholoff brought the sophomore home with an RBI single to right, making it a 7-0 Rochester lead. Nicholoff then stole second and came around to score as Keiper reached on an error to extend the lead to 8-0.
After Turner drew a four-pitch walk, the Golden Eagles made a pitching change, but a batter later, Mason clobbered a two-run double to left, scoring both Keiper and Mason to make it a 10-0 advantage.
Rochester would add two more runs to their tally in the top of the fourth, while White scattered three hits over the final two frames, striking out Emma DeJesus swinging to strand two in the fourth, and Dougherty with one on in the bottom of the fifth to finish off the 12-0 victory.
White (3-0) earned the win, allowing just four hits over 5.0 innings pitched, striking out seven. Roseland Stroh (1-4) took the loss for Brockport, allowing 10 runs on two hits, walking eight over 2.1 innings pitched.
As a team, UR tallied 12 runs on just six hits, drawing nine walks. Kim, Mason and Nicholoff each tallied three hits, with Mason leading the way with a double, triple and four RBI.
Gorecki and Sminchak each walked twice, as seven different Yellowjackets earned a free pass.
The Yellowjackets next return home to Southside Field to open conference play against RIT on Saturday, April 15 in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
