UR Scores Program-Record 25 in Win over SUNY Morrisville

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – University of Rochester women's lacrosse scored a program record 25 goals, breaking a 14-year-old program record as they raced past the SUNY Morrisville Mustangs en route to a 25-5 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

The Mustangs would keep things close early on, as Maddie Baum got Morrisville State on the scoreboard first, breaking the scoreless tie with an unassisted score just over a minute into the second quarter.

Emma Little answered Baum's goal with an unassisted score just over 20 seconds later before Brooke Fiannaca gave the Yellowjackets their first lead of the afternoon off Gracie Giannettino's assist with 12:42 to play in the first.

However, the Mustangs would answer with three straight, including two off the stick of Baum, taking a 4-2 lead on Baum's goal from Aria Treadway with 3:32 to play in the first.

But that would be the last goal SUNY Morrisville saw for nearly 46 minutes, as the 'Jacket defense would hold the Mustangs without another score till the 4:08 mark of the final quarter.

Just nine seconds later, Alyssa Gorny won the draw control and did it all herself, finding the back of the net for the 29th time this season to pull UR within a score. And then with just over a minute left in the first, Lorelei King leveled the match at four-all off an assist from Gorny, sending UR and Morrisville into the second quarter all tied at four.

Rochester though, would quickly break the 4-4 tie with Giannettino's free-position goal and score 11 unanswered in the second period to take a 15-4 lead.

Gorny followed Giannettino's free-position score with another one with 13:05 until the halftime buzzer to make it a 6-4 UR lead, before Heidi Donovan, Fiannaca and King rattled off three-straight over less than a minute of gameplay to make it a 9-4 lead.

The Yellowjackets dominated possession in the second period and from the first quarter on, winning nine of 12 draw controls in the second quarter and 22-of-33 overall.

Just a few minutes after King's goal made it 9-4 with 11:17 to play, Kassi Boehl added another off Giannettino's assist, before Giannettino and King went back-to-back notching two more in less than a minute to make it an eight-goal, 12-4 lead.

Boehl would then add another with 6:53 until the half before Fiannaca and King added two more off assists from Regi Merkin and Giannettino to give UR a 15-4 lead at the break.

UR would keep rolling to start the second half, scoring three goals in the first five minutes of the third, capped off by Hass Diallo's unassisted score with 10:35 left in the third.

The Yellowjackets would add three more goals in the third, including Tessa Little's woman-up goal off Fiannaca's assist with 51 seconds left, to take a 21-4 lead into the final period.

And though UR would slow things down a bit in the final frame, Zoe Sullivan would notch a hat trick and then add another to put the capper on the 25-5, 20-goal victory, helping Rochester tally the most goals in a game in program history.

Sullivan's score with 5:14 to play in the fourth off Erin Esposito's assist broke the previous record of 23, set originally by the Yellowjackets on March 29, 1995, against Buffalo State and most recently tied on March 10, 2009, vs. Oswego State.

With the win, Rochester moves to 7-5 on the year, while Morrisville State falls to 4-7. Emily Geiss earned the win for UR, while Maggie Jones took the loss for the Mustangs.

12 different 'Jackets recorded a point on the day, led by Giannettino's four goals and five assists for a total of nine points. Giannettino tied the program record for the most assists in a game and also tied for the third-most points in a game in program history.

11 different 'Jackets scored a goal, with Giannettino, King and Sullivan each netting four. King also led UR with 10 draw controls, tied for the third-most in a game in program history, while five Yellowjackets each recorded two ground balls.

In goal, Geiss made two saves in 34:42 minutes of action for Rochester, while Ava Saffren made two saves in relief.

As a team, Rochester outshot Morrisville State, 37-15, and 32-9 on goal, and  forced 19 Mustang turnovers.

Rochester next continues its three-game homestand with a pair of Liberty League matchups, beginning with a Saturday afternoon contest against Clarkson on Saturday, April 15 at 2 p.m. at Fauver Stadium.
