GAME ONE: Rochester 6, St. Lawrence 1
Both
Molly Broccolo and Jacee Casebolt would put up zeros through the first four frames, with Broccolo working around hits in the second, third and fourth, stranding a trio of Saints' base runners.
Â
Rochester would then break through in the top of the fifth.
Savannah Nowak led off the inning with a double and moved to second on
Molly Mason's groundout before
Hunter Gilbreath gave UR a 1-0 lead with an RBI groundout to the pitcher.
Â
The Saints would look to counter with a couple of two-out base hits against Broccolo, putting runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the frame, but the Webster, NY native got Meredith Rose to groundout to end the inning and keep Rochester in front.
Â
UR would add another in the top of the fifth, as
Bailey Nicholoff reached on a single, stole second, took third on
Jenna Gorecki's groundout and came home on a throwing error by Layne Fritz to make it a 2-0 lead.
Â
And after Broccolo stranded another base runner, one of seven the Saints left on, the Yellowjackets put the game out of reach with four more in the top of the seventh.
Â
Nowak again got the offense going, leading off the frame with a single and taking second on Mason's sacrifice bunt. An infield single by Gilbreath put two on with just one out for
Alexis Klee, who poked a single through the left side, scoring Nowak to make it 3-0.
Ally Kim then cleared the bases with a two-run triple to right center and came around to score on
Bailey Nicholoff's RBI groundout to make it 6-0 in favor of the Yellowjackets.
Â
The Saints would respond, getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning on Vivian Johnson's sacrifice fly, but Broccolo held St. Lawrence to just a run in the frame to finish off the 6-1 victory.
Â
Broccolo (14-2) scattered seven hits over 7.0 innings pitched to earn the win, allowing one unearned run and striking out four. Casebolt (1-1) took the loss for St. Lawrence allowing one run on two hits over 5.0 innings pitched, while Fritz allowed five runs on six hits over 2.0 innings pitched.
Â
At the plate, Nowak went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored to lead the Yellowjackets, while Kim went 2-for-4 with a double, triple, run scored and two RBI.
Â
GAME TWO: Rochester 7, St. Lawrence 4
The Yellowjackets again took the early lead, but St. Lawrence would quickly respond in the bottom of the frame.
Â
With one out in the top of the first, Nicholoff laced a double to left center, and after sophomore stole third, Gorecki reached on an error to bring Nicholoff home, giving UR a 1-0 lead.
Â
However, that lead would be short-lived, as St. Lawrence answered with four in the bottom of the inning. Johnson led off the inning with a triple, Tori Rotundo reached on a fielder's choice and Rose singled through the left side to bring home Johnson, and level the score at 1-1.
Â
Cora Ferguson then drew a walk to load the bases for Stella VanGee, who drew a hit-by-pitch to make it a 2-1 Saints' lead. Rochester made a quick call to the bullpen, bringing in
Christin Napierkowski to replace
Lauren Keys.
Â
Napierkowski got Sofia Berryhill to ground into a fielder's choice, getting the out at home, but another hit-by-pitch and RBI groundout to short made it 4-1 Saints after one.
Â
Napierkowski would settle things down in the second, working a 1-2-3 frame, but with three-straight two-out singles, St. Lawrence would again load the bases against UR.
Margaret Yerdon-Grange made another call to the bullpen, this time bringing in
Maddie White, who got Emily Siansky to pop out to end the threat and strand all three baserunners.
Â
The Yellowjackets then got things going in the top of the fourth, plating five runs on six hits to take the lead. Gorecki led things off with an infield single and was pinch-ran for by
Jensen Sminchak. Sminchak stole second, and after
Hannah Keiper popped out,
Madi Turner pulled UR within two with an RBI single down the left-field line.
Â
Down 4-2, two more 'Jacket singles by Nowak and Mason made it a 4-3 ballgame, before Gilbreath evened the score at four-all with an RBI double following a St. Lawrence pitching change.
Â
Klee then gave Rochester the lead with an RBI groundout to second, before Kim's RBI single made it a 6-4 UR advantage.
Â
In the circle, White kept things rolling, retiring the first seven batters the first-year faced, and while the Langley, VA native ran into some trouble with a one-out single in the single, White got Johnson to ground out to strand the runner at second base.
Â
In the top of the seventh, Rochester would add an insurance run on Nowak's RBI single, scoring
Ilana Weiss to extend the lead to 7-4, before White would finish the job with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to earn the win and nail down the victory.
