NYU Takes 7th Place at UAA's With 5-2 Win Over UR

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL – The University of Rochester men's tennis team wrapped up play at the UAA Championships on Sunday morning, falling by a 5-2 score to New York University in the 7th Place Match at Sanlando Park.

Rochester concludes its season 7-11 overall, with NYU moving to 7-8 on the season.

The two teams split the opening two points of the match in doubles play, with NYU winning at number one and UR taking the third doubles point. Shrey Arora and Alex Yang paired together for an 8-2 win against Kai Yuminaga and Krish Vennam at the top spot.

Rochester's Kavin Shukla and Rahul Ravi responded with an 8-5 during their third doubles matchup against Joseph He and Andy Watterson.

A back-and-forth number two doubles match would decide which team would take the lead after doubles. NYU edged out an 8-7 (5) win to grab the 2-1 lead. NYU's Alexander Lee and Boren Zheng were the victors over Kenneth Lee and Ahaan Malhotra.

The Yellowjackets battled in singles, with Vennam earning a point at the number one spot against Yang, who entered the match regionally ranked in the Northeast. Vennam won in straight sets, by a 6-3, 6-4 score, but it wasn't enough to lift the Yellowjackets to a comeback win.

NYU had already built the 2-1 lead after doubles and earned straight set wins from Watterson at number five and He at number three to go up 4-1 prior to Vennam's win for Rochester. Watterson topped Kei Ogawa 6-3, 6-0, with He defeating Shukla 6-4, 6-3.

After UR's second point, Rumaish Khastgir closed out the NYU victory with a 7-6 (6), 6-1 win over Ravi in the #4 spot in the order.

During the remaining two matches that were unfinished, Rochester's Yuminaga at #2 and Lee at #6 were neck-and-neck with their NYU opponents. Yuminaga dropped the opening set 6-2, but responded with a 7-5 second set win. At six, Lee and Arora alternated 6-2 wins in the first two sets, with Lee sitting up 2-1 in the third when the match concluded.
