CORTLAND, NY – Four SUNY Cortland pitchers combined on a 2-hitter as the University of Rochester baseball team succumbed by a 7-0 score to the host Red Dragons at Wallace Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The loss snaps Rochester's 4-game winning streak, and drops the Yellowjackets to 12-8 on the season. SUNY Cortland, who is receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com poll, moves to 16-7 in the campaign.
UR is back in action this weekend with a 3-game series against Liberty League opponent Clarkson on tap. Rochester hosts the Golden Knights on Friday in a 4 pm game, before the teams play two on Saturday, beginning at noon.
In Wednesday's defeat, just three baserunners reached for the Yellowjackets, with
Jackson Reed and
Luke Gregory each recording a 1-for-3 line at the plate.
Joseph Rende was hit by a pitch, while the Red Dragon pitchers also issued no walks in the strong performance.
Will McCarthy picked up the win for Cortland, tossing four 1-hit innings, facing one over the minimum in his action. He is 4-0 on the season. Bradley Battaglini tossed two perfect frames, Shane Van Dam added 1.1 innings and Liam Krasney closed out the victory striking out two in the final 1.2 innings.
Rochester used seven pitchers in a bullpen game during the loss, with
Sammy Rosenfield getting the start. The UR right-hander threw a 1-2-3 first inning, recording the only strikeout of the game by the Yellowjacket staff.
Matt Casiero gave up an unearned run in the second and was tagged with the loss, dropping to 1-2 on the year.
Jason Cobert added two innings, pitching the longest among all the Rochester pitchers used on Wednesday.

Luke Boylan,
Justin Grossman,
Magnus Sivertson and
Thomas Blaydes all tossed one inning for the Yellowjackets.
Cortland struck first with an infield single by Dylan Tierney in the bottom of the second inning.
Two runs came across in the fourth, boosting the lead to 3-0. The next frame, Nick Chemotti homered to right, scoring two more runs.
The Red Dragons closed out the scoring with a pair of runs in the sixth inning, led by an RBI single from Andrew Michalski and sacrifice fly from Chris Bonacci.
