Field Hockey Blanks Hartwick 1-0 on Opening Day

ONEONTA, NY – The 18th-ranked University of Rochester field hockey kicked off its 2023 campaign with a shutout victory, defeating Hartwick College 1-0 on Friday afternoon at Wright Stadium.

Sophomore Maeve Fogarty scored the lone goal of the contest for Rochester (1-0), with her tally coming three and a half minutes into final quarter.

On the stat sheet, the Yellowjackets dominated, especially in the first half, but couldn't break through for the opening goal. After 30 minutes, UR held a 10-1 shot advantage and took the first seven corners of the game.

For the game, the Yellowjackets led 21-8 in shots and 10-2 in corners.

Hartwick battled back with some chances late in the contest, getting eight shots overall, four of which came in the final period. Shortly after Fogarty's go-ahead goal, the Hawks (0-1) had a shot from Danielle Hand kicked away by UR keeper Kara Houston. Hartwick earned a corner on the same offensive possession, but Julie Rizzi's blast from the circle went wide.

UR provided a flurry in the circle during the 56th minute, looking to add a key insurance goal, but Hartwick goalie Ashley Luppens made three straight saves, denying tap-in attempts by Zoe Conomikes, Delainey Hebble and Anya Arseneau.

Three Yellowjackets led the team in shot attempts during the game, with Hebble, Fogarty and Conomikes each finishing with five. Jessica Unkel added four shots off the bench.

In between the pipes, Houston made three saves to earn the clean sheet. Luppens ended with 14 stops in a losing effort for the Hawks.

Rochester returns to action on Sunday morning for the teams home opener against Denison University at 11 am.
