#17 Hamilton Sneaks Past #21 UR in OT, 1-0

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – In what proved to be a very evenly matched contest between a pair of nationally ranked foes, visiting and 17th-ranked Hamilton College edged out a 1-0 overtime victory over the 21st-ranked University of Rochester Field Hockey team on Wednesday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium

Hamilton's Hannah Dillon scored five and half minutes into the extra session, just a minute after Rochester's Delainey Hebble had a goal disallowed after officials ruled her shot was taken just centimeters outside the circle.

Dillon connected on a backhand lifted ball from six yards along the left wing, weaving around goalkeeper Kara Houston in the Yellowjacket cage.

The game was a defensive battle throughout, with only 13 combined shots in the contest, nine by Hamilton (3-0) and four by Rochester. Hamilton held the lead in penalty corners as well, taking eight to Rochester's four.

Rochester (2-2) earned its first penalty corner of the game at the 7:23 mark of the first quarter. On the PC, senior Zoe Conomikes unleashed a rocket shot from the left wing along the circle, but her attempt screamed just wide of the cage.

First-year Grayson Honig got a tipped shot on target in the opening minute of the second quarter, but Hamilton keeper Abby Griffin was there for the save, preserving the clean sheet.

In the third quarter, Hamilton's Alden Duserick ripped a hard shot from eight yards along the right side, but Houston denied the chance with a strong kick save and poked the ball out of harms way.

During the 42nd minute, Dillon had two chances off a penalty corner for the Continentals. Her first shot was a bouncing ball into the pads of Houston in the goal, and after a scramble in front, she slipped a shot just towards the right post that the Yellowjacket keeper had to dive back to her left to save away.

With four and a half minutes to go in regulation, Rochester earned another corner and Conomikes had another blast from the left wing, with the Hamilton defense being able to deflect the shot off target.

The seven-on-seven overtime was exciting with chances both ways.

After Hamilton had the opening shot of the period blocked in front, at the other end, the Yellowjackets earned a penalty corner. Conomikes ended up taking another hard shot at goal, with it getting past Griffin this time. Fortunately for the Continentals, defender Grace Cooper was there to sweep the shot off the line for a defensive save.

UR earned a follow up corner, and a loose ball eventually found its way to Hebble's stick for what UR thought was the game-winner, only to see the goal snatched away.

Hamilton capitalized on the second chance and turned the tables getting the ball deep in the circle on the stick of Alana King. King would send a cross pass in front to Dillon who bobbled, dribbled to her left past Houston and flicked a backhand shot into the cage just avoiding the sticks of a pair of Yellowjacket defenders on the goal line.

Rochester returns to action on Saturday with another home matchup, hosting SUNY New Paltz at 11 am. UR follows that up with another ranked matchup, playing 4th-ranked Salisbury on Sunday afternoon.
