Chicago Sweeps UR to Wrap up UAA Round Robin #1

CLEVELAND, OH – University of Rochester women's volleyball fell to the University of Chicago Maroons, 3-0, in their final match of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Round Robin #1, hosted by Case Western Reserve University, on Sunday on Veale Court A.

The Yellowjackets and Maroons went back and forth early on in set one, with Ashley Cook scoring two service aces and Alexia Nelms and Myla Nover-Estes each picking up a kill. But with the score knotted at 9-9, Chicago rattled off three straight and then went on a 6-3 run following a Rochester timeout to take an 18-12 lead.

UR would call another timeout, but the Maroons continued their run, as Diya Mishra put down three more service aces to extend Chicago's lead to 23-12 before Maggie McInerney's kill gave the Maroons a 25-14 set-one victory.

Rochester would keep things close throughout the second set, fending off several UChicago runs with kills from Cook and Ruby Moore. Down 12-8 after an attack error, Nover-Estes served up an ace, and Moore followed with a kill to bring UR back within a point, but a service error gave Chicago the serve.

Then down 17-12, the Yellowjackets won the serve back after a timeout and pulled within four on Sonia McGaffigan's kill from McKenzie McDonald. UR would then cut the Maroon's lead to just one a few serves later on Cook's kill and Mishra's attack error, but Mishra answered with a kill to keep Rochester from tying the set.

Rochester would again pull within one on Nover-Estes' kill, but an attack error brought up set point for Chicago, and Jillian Amsler and Maya Patel combined for a block to finish off the set, 25-21.

The Maroons would then cruise to a straight-sets victory, racing out to a 6-0 lead in the third set, and leading by as many as 12 in the third. Chicago hit .500 in the final set, using a pair of long runs to pull away, before Kennedy Cheung's service ace gave the Maroons the victory, 25-12, and the match, 3-0.

Rochester falls to 9-4 (0-3 UAA) with the loss, while the Maroons move to 5-8 (1-2 UAA) with the win.

Cook and McGaffigan each led the 'Jackets with nine kills, while Cook also added two aces, as did Nover-Estes. McDonald led UR with 21 assists, while defensively, Moore and Nover-Estes tallied a team-high nine digs, with Nover-Estes notching seven.
