GENESEO, NY – The University of Rochester men's soccer team drew even with host SUNY Geneseo, earning a 1-1 score on Tuesday evening at Geneseo's College Stadium.
Rochester's
Kol Bassuk scored a 16th minute goal for the visitors, but Geneseo's Liam Mulderig answered for the host Knights in the second half, notching the tying goal in the 61st minute.
The Yellowjackets, ranked #12 in the newly released Division III poll from Tuesday, move to 5-0-3 on the season, while SUNY Geneseo pushes its record to 5-3-2.
In the opening minutes of the game, following a cross into the center of the box, UR's
Tyler Moran took a header looking for the left side of the goal. Moran's shot ended up forcing Geneseo's goalkeeper, Vincent Maronski, to make an early save.
Countering at the other end, the Knights' Tyler Lewandowski returned the favor, taking a hard volley shot from in close along the right side. His attempt tested
Santino Lupica-Tondo in the Rochester goal, with the Yellowjacket senior making one of three saves on the night in the fourth minute.
A set piece led to the opening goal of the night at the 15:09 mark of the first half.
Andrew Moglianesi sent a corner service into the box where it deflected off a Geneseo defender's foot and sat right in the crease where Bassuk lunged with his left foot and sent the ball into the net, just underneath the crossbar.
The goal was Bassuk's first of the season, and third of the sophomore defender's career.
Two minutes later, Rochester's
Avi Lamba and
Nick Swanger had two terrific chances to double the Yellowjacket lead, but some strong defense in the goal turned away those chances.
After a cross in from the right side, Lamba, who was posted in the center of the box, easily beat Maronski with his shot towards the left post, but waiting there for the team save was defender Ben Sanchez. After the rebound went right to Swanger six yards out on the left side, Maronski was able scramble back to his right and make the save, keeping the UR lead at 1-0.
Rochester dominated possession the rest of the half, but was unable to break through, leading 10-1 in shots and 5-1 in corners through 45 minutes.
Geneseo was able to turn the tables a bit in the second half, outshooting the Yellowjackets 5-3 over the final 45. Rochester did earned the only four corners in the final period, finishing with a big 9-1 advantage in that category.
In the 61st minute, the Knights notched the tying goal when Justin Arilotta sent a through ball up the middle just past a slide tackle attempt from a Yellowjacket defender. The ball led Lewandowski on a breakaway in close, but the Geneseo forward dropped a pass back across the goal mouth to Mulderig who outmuscled his defender along the crease and tapped his shot into low right corner.
Six minutes later, a through ball on Rochester's end found the foot of
EliJose Araujo along the left wing. Araujo took a left foot shot towards the far post, but Maronski was able to cut it off and make the save.
As time ticked away, the Yellowjackets applied heavy pressure in the offensive end, leading to a pair of corner kicks in the final two minutes. The second of the corners yielded a strong chance, as Araujo cracked a shot off the right post, just missing the game-winner with 28 seconds left on the clock.
Rochester is back in action on Saturday, kicking off University Athletic Association play at 5th-ranked University of Chicago at 1:30 pm central time.
