Grover Scores Twice in UR's Win Over #21 Cortland

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – The University of Rochester women's soccer team posted its second straight shutout to start the season, blanking #21 SUNY Cortland 2-0 on Monday afternoon at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

Senior forward Claire Grover connected for both goals and completed her opening weekend with three tallies after scoring in UR's 3-0 win over RIT on Friday.

Grace Kuropatkin earns her second clean sheet in as many attempts, making a pair of saves in the victory.

Rochester (2-0) seemed to be in control most of the contest, ending with an 11-4 shot advantage over the Red Dragons (0-1-1). UR also took three of the games five corner kicks and ended with approximately 60 percent of the time of possession, with two thirds of that in Cortland's end of the pitch.

Grover's opening goal came at the six minute mark of the first half on Rochester's first shot of the game. After solid pressure in its attacking zone, Rochester forced a turnover near midfield. Natalie Kocsis passed the ball up to Grover who juked a defender and slipped a low right-footed shot just inside the post and past Cortland keeper Kristen Spendal for the 1-0 lead.

Late in the first half, a long free kick opportunity for Megan Pung gave UR a clear shot on goal, but Spendal easily made the save to send the teams into the locker room separated by one goal. Pung ended up leading all players with four shots in the game.

After intermission, Grover again made quick work with her second goal of the game coming just 2:21 into the second half.

The play started with Kuropatkin in goal dishing out a pass to Emma Cohen who dribbled the ball up near midfield. Cohen sent the ball up to Sarah Martin who chipped a terrific one-timer through ball between two Red Dragon defenders to a streaking Grover who ran up and snuck a left-footed shot again into the low right corner of the net.

A minute later, Martin looked for a score of her own when she settled a long free kick and took a half volley attempt. The attempt from the edge of the box took a high bounce that was grabbed by Spendal for the save.

In the 51st minute, Pung nearly made it 3-0 Yellowjackets when she was unmarked in the crease on a corner kick, but her header attempt screamed just over the crossbar.

Late in the game, UR first-year Padt Skawratananond took a hard shot from the right wing towards the top left corner after a drop pass from Grover, but the attempt was blocked away by Cortland for a UR corner kick.

Up next, Rochester squares off on the road at Alfred University on Thursday evening starting at 6 pm.
