UR Women’s Soccer Drops Matchup with Ranked Carnegie Mellon

Prince Athletic Complex- The #20 University of Rochester Yellowjackets suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of #4 Carnegie Mellon University in a conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

UR faced a deficit early in the matchup, after a penalty in the box by a Rochester defender, gave Cecelia Dieterich a penalty kick, which was scored to provide the Tartans with a 1-0 lead in the games opening 15 minutes.

Both teams went back and forth with possession for the rest of the half, with only three shots being taken by both teams after the first goal.

UR picked up the pace a bit in the second half. Five minutes in, the Yellowjackets earned their first scoring chance of the game when Riya Kunderan crossed a ball to Claire Grover in front of the goal, Grover was able to gain control, and fire a shot with her right foot but the shot was saved by CMU keeper Abby O'Connor.

Carnegie Mellon added another goal to the scoreboard when Helena Locateli sent a long ball from the opposite 35-yard line to Audrey Blanco, who had a free lane to the goal and chipped it in just over the shoulder of UR keeper Grace Kuropatkin.

The Yellowjackets couldn't climb out of the hole they fell into but displayed a stronger second-half effort after Eileen Harvey sent in a strike from 15 yards out that was saved by the Tartans keeper. Sydney Holmes also had a near-goal opportunity after her header attempt missed wide left on a corner kick.

For the game, Rochester was able to lead in the shots department taking ten shots compared to the Tartans seven.

O'Connor made three saves in preserving the shutout for CMU, while Kuropatkin made one stop for Rochester in goal.
