UR Tops Skidmore 3-2 in Road League Matchup

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The University of Rochester field hockey team secured its second straight Liberty League victory, defeating host Skidmore College 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Wagner Park.

Graduate student Zoe Conomikes scored the game-winning goal off a rebound early in the fourth quarter, helping the Yellowjackets (13-3, 3-2 Liberty League) rally from a deficit late in the third quarter.

Rochester's other goals were scored by Emilia Parrado and Anya Arseneau. Parrado's tally came in the second quarter and was the first of her career. Arseneau notched the game-tying goal, her second of the season late in the third quarter.

Skidmore (8-8, 2-3 Liberty League) wasted no time getting their offense in gear, quickly earning a corner in the opening minute. That corner yielded the opening goal of the game, a score from Colby Paul, with Ella Costa picking up the assist.

Rochester flipped the script and pushed forward, earning three corners over the next three minutes. Those corners ended up with shots from Grayson Honig and two by Hannah Mehta, but the Skidmore defense and goalkeeper Victoria Bodnar kept the 'Jackets off the scoreboard.

At the 5-minute mark, Skidmore's Abby Ezickson fired a shot on the cage, but UR keeper Kara Houston was there for the save.

In a defensive second quarter, the Yellowjackets knotted the game at 1-1 behind Parrado's goal, with Honig picking up an assist. Honig dribbled along the left sideline and flipped a pass in front, where Parrado was able to backhand flick a shot inside the post for the tying goal.

The game remained 1-1 until late in the third quarter when Skidmore earned a penalty stroke attempt following a foul in the circle on a breakaway in the 43rd minute. Paul stepped up and snuck her shot into the right side of the cage, just outside of the reach of Houston to pull Skidmore in front.

The lead didn't last long though, as UR answered less than a minute later off a penalty corner. Mara Heppard inserted the ball to Arseneau along the right wing and the junior midfielder snuck a shot inside the right post for the equalizer.

UR carried the momentum into the fourth quarter, leading to the Conomikes game-winner in the 49th minute.

After two penalty corners, the ball was swept around to Arseneau along the right wing. The ball was sent towards the cage where Sofia LaFalce redirected it to a wide open Conomikes in close on the left side. The grad student then swept her shot between the legs of Bodnar for the go-ahead score.

Rochester successfully defended two Skidmore penalty corners and Houston came away with another save in the final five minutes, holding on for the key victory, pushing Rochester into third place in the Liberty League conference standings.

Houston finished with three saves for Rochester, while Bodnar ended with four stops for the Thoroughbreds who played without a goalie for the final 98 seconds in an attempt to notch a game-tying goal.

Rochester's next game is scheduled for Friday at home against Rensselaer, with that game serving as the home regular season finale at Fauver Stadium.
