Ithaca Edges UR Women’s Tennis, 5-4

University of Rochester women's tennis dropped a closely-contested match to the Ithaca College Bombers, 5-4, on Saturday morning inside the Georgen Athletic Center.

Rochester took two of the first three doubles matches to grab an early lead. Lauren Kallas and Neha Dania gave UR its first doubles win at the No. 3 spot, defeating Ithaca's Ava Casell-Lepetina and Maddie Sutro, 8-5. And then at No. 1 doubles, Josephine Libby and Sanjana Karnam topped Taylor Crain and Alysa Pop, 8-5, to make it a 2-0 Yellowjacket lead.

Sabrina Cheung and Kendall Curley took the third doubles match though for the Bombers, defeating Jaclyn Dron and Jasmin Toor and No. 2 doubles, before Crain, ranked 40th nationally and 10th regionally, topped Libby at the No. 1-singles spot: 6-2, 6-3, to level the score at 2-all.

Lauren Kallas helped UR briefly retake the lead, topping Cheung at No. 4 singles: 6-2, 6-0, but the Bombers took the next three singles matches to secure the victory.

At the two spot, Pop beat Karnam: 6-1, 7-5, to level the match score at 3-3, while at three singles, Curley gave the Bombers their first lead of the afternoon with a 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) victory over Toor, edging the sophomore on the second-set tiebreak.

Dania would pick up a late win for Rochester at the No. 5 spot, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 over Casell-Lepetina, but Sutro clinched the match at six singles for the Bombers, defeating Dron: 6-2, 6-2 to give Ithaca a 5-4 victory.

Rochester drops to 2-2 with the loss, while the Bombers remain undefeated at 2-0 with the win.

The Yellowjackets are next in action on March 10 when they open their spring trip in Orlando, FL with a matchup against the Denison University Big Red.
