UR Drops Back-and-Forth Affair in OT at SUNY Brockport

BROCKPORT, NY – In a game that featured eight ties and six lead changes, the University of Rochester women's lacrosse team fell to the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles, 12-11, in overtime on Sunday afternoon at Dr. Linda Arena and the Class of '69 Field Hockey Venue/A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field.

Heidi Donovan got the Yellowjackets on the scoreboard first, giving Rochester an early lead off Alyssa Gorny's assist just over three minutes into the opening quarter. And after Brockport's Cassidy Burnash broke the seal for the home squad and leveled the score at 1-1, Donovan scored again, this time an unassisted score, to retake a 2-1 lead for UR with 9:24 left in the first.

Brockport though, quickly won the draw control and again tied the score, this time at 2-2, on another score from Burnash, this time assisted by Alayna Foos, before just minutes later after a yellow card on UR, Tristan Davis gave the Golden Eagles their first lead of the contest.

Davis' woman-up goal with 7:56 left in the first gave Brockport a 3-2 lead, and while the two sides would combine for 18 spots in the opening period, neither team would score again before the quarter break.

Just under three minutes into the second, Burnash made it 4-2 in favor of the Golden Eagles, scoring off a free-position attempt to make it a two-goal lead.

This time though, Rochester came up with a quick response, as Gorny won the draw control, and seconds later, Anna Rogers scored, pulling the 'Jackets back within one. Gorny would then find the equalizer at the 11:12 mark of the second quarter off a free-position shot, but after Abby Smith won the ensuing draw control, the Golden Eagles forced a turnover and retook the lead.

Foos picked up the ground ball with just over 10 minutes left in the first half, and Julia Quinlan found Davis for another score, giving Brockport a 5-4 lead.

Lorelei King would equalize a little over a minute later though, off an assist from Emily Schillinger, and the two sides would head into the locker room all tied up at five.

Both goalies, Ava Saffren for UR and Arianna Reed for Brockport, made saves early in the third, and after Saffren saved Davis' shot, Campbell Sy picked up the ground ball and took it the other way. The ball made its way to Schillinger, who this time found Grace Crochiere for the score, giving Rochester its first lead since the opening period.

The Yellowjackets would score again, keeping the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard for more than 24 minutes to action, as King's second score of the afternoon, off another assist from Schillinger, made it a 7-5 Rochester lead with 5:49 left in the third.

But the Golden Eagles would break through on Davis' score with 1:56 left in the period, scoring twice in the final two minutes of the quarter, including a score with just three ticks on the clock, to again level the score, this time at 7-7.

Just under two minutes into the fourth Gorny scored a pair in quick success, first finding the back of the net at the 13:16 mark to make it 8-7 UR, before Talia Feldman found Gorny for another goal just seconds later, extending the 'Jackets lead to 9-7.

But Brockport would again answer with a bit of a run, scoring three-straight and two-unanswered goals over the next nine minutes, taking a 10-9 lead on Paige Throwe's goal from Foos with 4:40 to play.

Under a minute later though, Rochester found the equalizer, leveling the score for the seventh time on Rodgers' second goal of the afternoon, this one at the 3:52 mark off an assist from King. UR then would take the lead on Crochiere's free-position goal just past the three-minute mark and looked to finish off a potential victory with less than three minutes left.

But a yellow card gave Brockport an opening, and Foos took advantage, leveling the score at 11-all with 26 seconds to play. Rochester won the ensuing draw control and nearly scored a walk-off winner, but Reed saved Schillinger's shot with 13 seconds left, and the two sides headed to overtime.

In overtime, both teams got possession but could not get a shot off, and after a turnover in the midfield, Foos again found the back of the net, giving the Golden Eagles a 12-11 victory.

Rochester drops to 1-1 with the loss, while SUNY Brockport moves to 1-0 with the win.

Gorny led UR with three goals on nine shots, while four different Yellowjackets: Crochiere, Donovan, King and Rogers each scored two. Schillinger notched a team-high three assists, while defensively, Crochiere and Jenna Ufberg each picked up three ground balls.

In goal for UR, Saffen made nine saves, while Reed made 11 for the home side.

The Yellowjackets are back in action on Friday, March 1 when they host St. John Fisher University in their home opener at 4:00 p.m. inside Edwin Fauver Stadium.
