COCOA BEACH, FL – The University of Rochester men's tennis team won the final two singles matches and rallied for a 4-3 victory over Division II Bentley University on Monday afternoon during the team's spring break trip to Florida at the Cocoa Beach Racquet Club.
Senior
Kei Ogawa won the deciding point at fifth singles, coming back from a set down to post a 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory over Noah Monsanto, securing UR's fifth win of the season. Rochester moves to 5-1 this spring.
Ogawa's clinching point was set up when graduate student
Kai Yuminaga scored a clutch win at number two, topping Gabe Horwitz 7-5, 6-3.
The contest started with Bentley (4-6) taking all three doubles matches to secure the one doubles point. Division I and II scoring uses doubles play as one point in the overall match.
As play turned to singles, UR's
David Riccio got things started for UR with a 6-2, 6-2 win at number six against Jonathan Muravchik to level the overall score.
Kavin Shukla, the UAA Performer of the Week announced on Monday, followed with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Reilly O'Brien to put the 'Jackets in front 2-1.
Bentley followed by securing the next two points at number one and number three to pull back ahead. Max Bonte topped UR's
Krish Vennam at number one 6-3, 6-4, while Ansh Chadha won in three sets over
Rahul Ravi 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 for the Falcons singles wins.
That set up the rallied finish from Yuminaga and Ogawa to earn Rochester the victory.
Last season, Ogawa played hero in another big spring break match, topping nationally ranked Haverford. He ended up winning the match-clinching point three times during the 2022-23 season.
Up next after break, UR returns home and hosts Vassar College on March 24 in the Goergen Athletic Center.
