University of Rochester softball made it five-in-a-row with a doubleheader sweep of the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon at Southside Field, run-ruling the Golden Eagles in both contests. UR walked off game one, 8-0, in a run-rule-shortened six innings on
Bailey Nicholoff's two-run homer, before
Lauren Keys and
Maddie White combined to pitch a five-inning, run-rule-shortened no-hitter in game two, helping UR prevail, 10-0.
Â
With the two wins, the Yellowjackets move to 11-5 on the year and have not allowed a run in 24 innings dating back to their final matchup at The Spring Games on March 14 vs. Lakeland University, while the Golden Eagles fall to 5-11 on the year.
Â
GAME ONE:
Rochester 8, SUNY Brockport 0 (6 inn.)
Molly Broccolo took the ball in game one for Rochester and worked around Emma DeJesus' leadoff single in the top of the first, stranding DeJesus at second to send the Yellowjackets to the plate. The Yellowjackets would also put the leadoff batter aboard, as
Riley Laygo drew a seven-pitch walk, but unlike SUNY Brockport, Rochester would bring the first-year around to score.
Â
After Nicholoff's groundout advanced Laygo to second,
Hannah Keiper drew a one-out walk to put runners at first and second. Up next,
Jenna Gorecki brought home the game's first run with an RBI single to center, but Brockport would hold UR to just one, as Kellie Gentile threw Keiper out at home trying to score on
Julianna Lyons' flyout, keeping the 'Jackets' lead at just one.
Â
The Golden Eagles tallied another hit in the top of the second, but
Hunter Gilbreath and
Molly Mason combined to catch Cece Rappleyea trying to steal second, and Broccolo struck out Natalie Faas looking, one of three strikeouts looking over the first three frames for the sophomore pitcher, giving UR a chance to extend its lead.
Â
UR would do just that in the bottom of the second, with Mason singling to short and taking second on an error, moving to third on Gilbreath's sacrifice bunt and scoring on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
Â
The Yellowjackets would add two more in the bottom of the third after Broccolo settled in and worked a 1-2-3 frame in the top of the inning, plating two more runs on four hits. Laygo again got things going with a leadoff single, and Nicholoff followed with a double to center, putting runners at second and third with nobody out.
Â
Brockport made a pitching change, bringing in Fiona Gibiser to relieve Rose Stroh, but Keiper knocked in the first run of the inning with an RBI single through the left side, and Gorecki added another with an RBI single to center, doubling Rochester's lead.
Â
In the top of the fourth, Broccolo again set down the side in order, before UR would add two more to its tally.
Katelyn Wade made it four-straight innings with the leadoff batter aboard, singling through the left side and stealing second.
Loren Castilloux then brought the first-year home with an RBI double to left center, and three batters later, Gorecki added her third RBI hit of the afternoon, scoring Castilloux to extend the Yellowjackets' lead to 6-0.
Â
Both teams went scoreless in the fifth, and after Broccolo worked around just her third hit allowed in the top of the sixth, Rochester finished things off in the bottom of the frame.
Â
Laygo led off the inning with a single, and just two pitches later, Nicholoff blasted a towering, two-run homer to left, giving the Yellowjackets an 8-0, walk-off run-rule victory.
Â
Broccolo (5-2) picked up the win, allowing just three hits and striking out four in the complete-game shutout, while Stroh (0-2) took the loss for Brockport, allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits over 2.0 innings pitched.
Â
Gorecki drove in three, going 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI to lead UR at the plate, while Nicholoff went 2-for-3 with a double, home run, two runs scored and two RBI.
Â
Laygo, batting in the leadoff spot for the first time, tallied two hits, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Castilloux scored and drove in a run, going 1-for-3 with a double.
Â
GAME TWO: Rochester 10, SUNY Brockport 0 (5 inn.)
DeJesus led off the top of the first inning with a four-pitch walk, but the senior would be the lone Golden Eagle to reach base all game. DeJesus took second on Danielle Wenzek's sacrifice bunt, but the 'Jackets caught her trying to take third, turning two on the sacrifice bunt, before Gentile flew out to end the inning.
Â
The Yellowjackets though, would go in order themselves in the bottom of the frame, as both
Lauren Keys and Hadley Alguire combined to put zeros up on the scoreboard in each of the first two frames.
Â
But after Keys set down the side in order again in the top of the third, UR broke through to the tune of six runs on five hits, putting up a crooked number in the bottom of the inning.
Â
Three-straight singles from Wade, Castilloux and Laygo loaded the bases, and while Alguire got Nicholoff on an infield fly, Keiper drew a four-pitch walk to push across a run and give Rochester a 1-0 lead. Gorecki then got the green light on a 3-0 pitch and smashed a double to left-center, scoring a pair to make it a 3-0 ballgame and force the Golden Eagles to make a pitching change.
Â
Kendall Phillips relieved Alguire after 2.1 innings of work, but Rochester kept the runs coming, re-loading the bases on Lyons' hit-by-pitch, before Mason's RBI single made it 4-0.
Ilana Weiss drew another bases-loaded walk to make it 5-0, while Wade, batting for the second time in the inning, hit a sacrifice fly to center, bringing Lyons home to extend UR's lead to 6-0.
Â
Keys kept things rolling in the circle with another 1-2-3 frame in the fourth, while the 'Jackets added four more in the bottom of the frame. Nicholoff drew a four-pitch walk and quickly moved around the bases, taking second on a passed ball and third and home on a pair of wild pitches, giving Rochester a 7-0 lead.
Â
Another walk and Gorecki's infield single would put two on with two outs for
Marie Kinchington, pinch-hitting for Weiss, and the sophomore got just enough Gibiser's first pitch, hitting a three-run homer off the left fielder's glove and over the left-field wall to make it a 10-0 Rochester advantage.
Â
And with both a no-hitter and run-rule-victory in sight,
Maddie White, who relieved Keys to start the fifth, made quick work of the Golden Eagles in the top of the fifth, needing just eight pitches to finish off the victory.
Â
Keys and White combined to pitch the no-hitter, the Yellowjackets first since Broccolo no-hit SUNY Brockport on April 12 last year. Keys (5-1) earned the win, walking one and striking out three over 4.0 innings pitched, while White didn't allow a baserunner over her inning of work.
Â
For Brockport, Alguire (2-2) took the loss, allowing five runs on four hits, walking one of 2.1 innings pitched.
Â
Gorecki again led UR at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI, while Kinchington went 1-for-1 with a home run, run scored and three RBI. Wade also added two hits, going 2-for-2 with a double, run scored and RBI as Rochester scored 10 runs on eight hits, drawing five walks and striking out just twice.

Rochester next opens Liberty League play against RIT on Saturday, April 6 with a doubleheader scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
