Women’s Lacrosse Falls to No. 6 William Smith on Senior Day

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – The University of Rochester women's lacrosse dropped its Senior Day matchup against the 6th-ranked William Smith College Herons, 21-8 on Saturday inside Edwin Fauver Stadium.

After the Herons fired the opening salvo, scoring on first on Katherine Murray's 17th goal 57 seconds into the first, the Yellowjackets quickly answered to tie things up at one-all. Jenna Ufberg won the draw and a little over a minute later, Gracie Crochiere found Anna Rogers to even the score at 1-1.

Less than a minute later though, William Smith retook the lead on Molly Davis' free-position score, and the Herons would hold their 2-1 lead over the next six minutes.

At the 5:30 mark of the first though, Rochester again tied things up at two, with Alyssa Gorny finding the equalizer on a free-position shot to make it 2-2.

The Herons, however, would answer with three-straight goals of their own, taking a 5-2 lead on Emily Griffin's free-position shot with a little under two minutes left in the first.

Once again though, Rochester responded, with Gracie Giannettino pulling UR back within two scores on an acrobatic finish assisted by Gorny, and after the Herons tallied another, Emily Schillinger put one through with just eight seconds left to send UR into the second quarter down just 6-4.

But after Maura Smeader saved two early shots from Rogers and Gorny, the Herons went back on the offensive, scoring six-straight goals and seven in the quarter to take a 13-6 lead at the halftime break.

The Herons scored six goals over nine minutes, beginning with Davis' free-position goal at the 11:39 mark of the second until Ufberg finally got the 'Jackets back on the scoreboard with 1:34 left in the first half.

UR scored two goals late, Ufberg's from Giannettino and another unassisted score by Schillinger, but the Herons took a 13-6 lead into the locker room and quickly expanded it to double digits in the third.

William Smith added seven more goals to their tally in the third, holding Rochester to just one shot in the period, and while the 'Jackets would outscore the Herons, 2-1 in the fourth, it'd prove to be too little, too late.

Down 21-6 with 3:55 to play, Regi Merkin got the Yellowjackets back on the scoreboard, weaving through a trio of Herons' defenders for the unassisted score, while Schillinger notched her third goal of the afternoon for UR's final tally, as the 6th-ranked Herons finished off the 21-8 victory.

No. 6 William Smith moves to 14-2 (8-1 LL) with the win, while the Yellowjackets fall to 8-7 (5-4 LL) with the loss.

Offensively, Schillinger led UR with three goals, while Giannettino tallied two assists. Gorny notched a team-high six draw controls, while Crochiere picked up a team-high five groundballs.

Defensively, Lorelei King caused a pair of turnovers, while in goal, Ava Saffren made five saves.

Rochester next will take a break from conference play, wrapping up its non-conference and home slate with a matchup against Nazareth University on Tuesday, April 23 at 4:00 p.m.
